Great Mix of Genres!,
By
This review is from: Live at Club Passim (Audio CD)
Great CD! What I like most about this one is that you get a little bit from each of the genres that Susan writes/plays in. This CD has some of the jazzers (I Can't Be New, Give Me Chicago Anyday), some of the SW folky classics (Time Between Trains, Barbed Wire Boys), some of the honest, emotional ballads (May I Suggest, After All of This) and plenty of the agnostic gospel numbers with full band. It also includes a fantastic live version of a song that defies categorization or explanation, the SW live show classic, Movie of My Life.
The whole record captures the warmth, humor and wit that is Susan Werner LIVE. It's a fantastic gift item if you're looking to introduce a new listener to Susan's music, because this CD is like SW Tapas. You get a taste of everything. ;) Enjoy!

Wow. Listening to this CD is like having my own personal concert with Susan in my living room. Since I've moved to rural Virginia, I no longer have the luxury of listening to Susan in person. Seeing her in person is a pure delight--she is an excellent performer in every way--and sings a song with such emotion, you'd think it was the first time she ever sang it. This CD captures all of the brilliance, talent and emotion found in her concerts. The vocals and harmonica of Trina Hamlin add energy and fullness to this recording--and take Susan's brilliant performance to the next level. If you wonder what Susan is like in concert, this CD captures that in a wonderful way. This is a collection of some of her best songs, and it is a joy to listen to. I never tire of hearing it.

I discovered Susan Werner as the writer of several songs performed by Red Molly. I have been a Red Molly fan for about a year, and had found that Susan Werner wrote "May I Suggest" - one of my favorite songs. Susan's version of the song is on this CD, and it's excellent.
The CD contains an interesting mix of musical styles: jazz, Americana, etc. She has a very engaging stage presence and it comes through well on the recording. There is a notable tilt toward agnosticism in some comments and songs, but as a Humanist I found it relevant and humorous. If this does not agree with your religious views, don't let that stop you from buying the CD. It's more tolerant than anything else, and the music is still great. Hearing this CD has made me want to see her live, and am looking forward to a tour date in my area. In the meantime, I'll be listening to this disk a lot.

This is simply Susan at her very best! Trina adds amazing harmonica and vocal backups! These women are so very gifted! The CD is almost as good as seeing and hearing them live!

Susan at her funniest,

If you're a Susan fan, this is part of your collection. She's funny, and explains some of the background of her songs, especially off of Gospel Truth. She has two newer songs on her, not recorded elsewhere, I don't think. Good fun Susan listening.
