Editorial Reviews

After Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine left the band, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter decided to continue their successful project with a new rhythm set: drummer Omar Hakim, Victor Bailey on bass and percussionist Jose Rossy. Weather Report's Cologne concert shows the band in musical top form. In a more than two-hour show, the bandsparks a firework of rhythm and melodies. Next to classics like +¤Birdland," in this concert you will hear pieces from later phase of Weather Report: +¤D Flat Waltz," +¤Procession," and +¤Where The Moon Goes".The material has been completely restored and re-mastered.

This is another great Weather Report CD! This is the final version of the band, with bassist Victor Bailey, percussionist Jose Rossy, and drummer Omar Hakim forming the rhythm section. They had the unenviable task of following Jaco Pastorius, Robert Thomas, and Peter Erskine, and I must say, they came through with flying colors! This CD featured mostly new material, which was very refreshing, but to accommodate those who liked the old tunes, the band played a five song "greatest hits" medley. I wished a DVD would be included, like "Live in Berlin 1975". Regardless, this recording is another gem for Weather Report fans!

I have always loved hearing Weather Reports live recordings, and this one didn't fail. With their final line up,they had a rejuvenation of energy,without skipping a beat.I recommend this recording,for the simple reason,that Zawinul,Shorter,combination, along with their new sidemen gave a powerful performance to these new and to the older arrangements.I'm 56, and all of their recordings,might be a little bias. These are legendary musicians,Joe Zawinul 1932-2007,the modern day Mozart',Wayne Shorter,great composer,arranger,musician.This is a must have,for I am told by my musician friends,Weather Report,was the musicians,musicians band.Love this band,Samuel;

Both the CD, ""Weather Report, Live, a musical documentary feature the drummer, Omar Hakim, who I feel sets the pace for the hard-driving pace, that the group "Weather Report" is know for.
I truly enjoyed the listening experience.

The quality of compositions started to become spotty at this point in Weather Report's history. I had forgotten what some of these sounded like. I do like D flat Waltz, Fast City and Two Lines, and Where the Moon goes is a quirky piece that kicks into gear as it progresses. I think I like these because of the relentless rhythms and interesting percussion. D flat Waltz is apparently an early version - it does not include some of the cool quirks of the version on Domino Theory, which I like on the whole. Weather Report must have worked on some compositions in live shows before recording them, so they evolved. I have found some live audience and soundboard recordings of WR from their Night Passage tour, which are many times better than what is represented on this CD. I do like Omar and Victor - Zawinul and Wayne were lucky to find them to step in. On elast comment - the medley is an unfortunate garble of great WR pieces. It just doesn't come across well on this CD. I suggest one listen to this before purchasing.

Good sound. The live version of the post-Jaco era songs really sound much better. I was thinking the medley at the end of the show was going to be some generic "meh" filler - but it really flows nicely. My only complaint about that track is that it leaves you wanting more. I'd love to hear that line up of Weather Report playing Elegant People.
