A Dynamite CD!,
By
This review is from: Live At The Columns (Audio CD)
A truly excellent recording of some good jazz played in a New Orleans hotel, Live at the Columns does indeed sound live, from the sound of the audience to the timbral accuracy and dynamic impact of the instruments. The only sonic drawback--a common one to jazz recordings--is a larger-than-life rendition of the drum kit that makes it sound as if drummer John Vidacovich has arms that are 8' long. Other than that, this is a dynamite recording, an achievement in which the musicians (Tony Dagradi on saxophones, James Singleton on bass, and the aforementioned Mr. Vidacovich on drums) and the engineer (Don Turnipseed) should all take great pride. The musical selections include standards such as "Body and Soul" and "Blue Monk" as well as original tunes by Dagradi and Vidacovich.
