Tight plotting - generally a good read,

This review is from: To Live & Die in Dixie (Callahan Garrity, No 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Try this author. She does not have the high public profile of some other female authors but she stands up there with the Graftons and Paretskys. This author has a lovely writing style and has created warm, believable characters. The mystery is compelling but I found myself wanting and enjoying more the dialogue and interaction between the characters.

I have read all of Kathy Hogan Trocheck's books many many times. She is the best writer of fiction that I have ever read. Callahan is one great sleuth. Also be sure to check out Mary Kay Andrews who is also Kathy Hogan Trocheck. This book is set in Atlanta and she makes you feel if you are right there with Callahan. If you are familiar with the area, you will recognize a lot of the places that she mentions. GREAT BOOK!

This is a quick, light mystery novel. I liked it but I didn't love it. The characters are mostly believable and I liked the way the characters interact. True to form, the women in this book are strong. It held my interest while I was laying on the beach, but if you're a true crime drama fan, skip this one. For us light-weights its fine, but its not for REAL mystery fans!

I read this book in record time. It was a fairly easy read but still interesting enough to make it difficult to put down. Fairly predictable ending, but it does keep you guessing until the end. Glad to have discovered "Callahan Garrity".

Boring and lots of editorial problems...,
This review is from: To Live & Die in Dixie (Callahan Garrity, No 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Two characters in this book end up in a frigid river after a car accident in Chapter 25 and are nearly frozen to the bone as a result of it. Rather strange considering the setting of this book is a hot, broiling, steamy summer in Atlanta. Believe me, there is no such thing as a frigid river anywhere near Atlanta in the summertime. Another character drives her three young children around in car seats strapped into the back seat of a Chevrolet Camaro. THREE baby seats strapped in the back seat of a CAMARO? Sorry, I'll believe that when I see it. Two people are nearly burned to death on the main character's front lawn but after being taken to the hospital they hardly have a burnt spot on them. And I guess it's possible that real cops solve murder mysteries by driving around Atlanta and chatting up potential suspects who immediately confess their crimes but it doesn't make for a very exciting murder mystery book. The main character has a too-perfect boyfriend who never complains about being used and abused and she has an under-ppreciated mother as well. All of the unlikeable characters in the book get treated like gold and it's never really clear why the main character is so irritable and grouchy all the time when she doesn't seem to have it all that bad. A lot of the writing lacks any depth or direction and the scene between the main character and the high school volleyball coach is so poorly written as to be laughable. And not in a good way.

I was hoping the paperback book size would be a little larger. Disappointed because it was sort of a "smallish" book.

This is the kind of book your select when you don't want to have to put forth the effort to think. An easy, pleasant read.

I love all this author's books! The Callahn Garrity series is one of my favorites as far as mysteries go. I love the characters she brings to life, especially those working for her at her House Mouse cleaning business!
