Derek Bell (1935-2002), the Chieftains' longtime harpist, was a former child prodigy who mastered the piano, several woodwinds and even the cimbalom, which he played on Maurice Jarre's soundtrack to Doctor Zhivago. He was already a noted classical composer and multi-instrumentalist by the time he picked up the harp in mid-life, but it soon consumed him. After meeting Paddy Moloney in 1972, he sat in on the Chieftains 4, still one of the group's finest albums. His unexpected death left surviving band-mates bereft but typically, they decided to celebrate his life with the music he loved so dearly. Drawn from two memorial concerts which were aired on Irish radio, the selections exemplify the Chieftains' twin doctrines of Celtic authenticity and global inclusion. But after the joy and remembrance, Triona Marshal, alone with her harp, plays the Farewell To Music. There could not have been a dry eye in the house. --Christina Roden

Product Description

Live From Dublin: A Tribute To Derek Bell is an album taken from a live concert honoring the former Chieftain who died unexpectedly in 2002. Bell first joined The Chieftains in 1972, and his skills on oboe, horn, cor anglais, hammer dulcimer, keyboards and a host of other instruments played a key part in the band's success. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching tribute, February 23, 2005
By
This review is from: Live From Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell (Audio CD)
As a fan of the group, I have been lucky to see Derek Bell live in concert. This album is a very touching tribute to him. What better way to celebrate than with the music he enjoyed playing.

There is one warning about this CD, and it's not the music - it's with the copy protection. This CD uses the new MediaMax. You can NOT rip this CD to your hard drive. You can copy the tracks to your hard drive, but ONLY as 128kb/s WMA since the WMAs have secure DRM. If you are MAC or iPod user you are out of luck. Hopefully iTunes will carry the album with it's own DRM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missing Derek Bell, March 3, 2005
This review is from: Live From Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell (Audio CD)
This is a fitting tribute to Derek Bell, the "lovliest old rogue" of the Chieftains. On some selections, the sound is "thin" because his harp work is gone. That is a poignant

inclusion and I appreciate it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange bedfellows, April 30, 2009
By
This review is from: Live From Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because I can't get enough of An Evening with The Chieftains. I have no issue with copyright protection and I don't advocate illegal file-sharing, but the protection on this CD went too far. It was gathering dust on my shelf until I found out how to make an exact audio copy of it. Now I'm reacquainting myself with this CD. If you're a Chieftains fan, it's worth the effort.
