Like his jazz counterpart Jai Uttal, Krishna Das is a U.S. native whose life was changed forever by the discovery of the Hindu religion. Yet unlike Uttal, who has explored the realms of world and jazz music and collaboration, Das has focused his energies toward the art of Indian classical chant exclusively. The result is a long career of spreading the love and spirituality of the Hindustani tradition while gleaning a large following that's included the likes of Sting and Madonna. But this isn't the reason to respect Das, rather his investment in using chant to heal, find the grace of God, and purify the soul. Though Das's voice falls somewhat flat on this two-CD album, he's accompanied by a wonderful gaggle of percussionists, whose layered cadences create a tapestry as rich in color and detail as an Indian ragamala itself. The accompanying choir of some 20 chanters is the other highlight, offering a cold salve to Das's harsh, monotonous tone. But after all, the point of chant is to invoke God, not please the ear, and if this is your goal, Live on Earth well satisfies. --Karen K. Hugg

Biography

Layering traditional Hindu kirtan with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” With a remarkably soulful voice that touches the deepest chord in even the most casual listener, Krishna Das – known to friends, family, and fans as simply KD – has taken the call-and-response chanting out of yoga ... This CD brings the magic and love one experiences at a Kirtan meditation with Krishna Das to our daily lives. Krishna Das has indisputably received a gift of having the most beautiful open heart which he shares with such grace and gentility. I listened to this CD for a long time before participating in a live Kirtan(singing meditation). The first time I heard him live was when he accompanied Ram Das and there were at least 200 people chanting together. The energy he emits is one of love in its purest form. I then brought my two teenagers to a retreat with Krisnha Das. Not only did I have to bribe them to go but I promised them that if they didn't like it they could leave within the first 5 minutes. They stayed all weekend and since then have bought CD's for their friends and have learned many of the chants. After they experienced Kirtan first hand, they never asked me to play their radio station while we drove somewher again. This CD is so special because it captures the spirit of a live Kirtan allowing memories of the experience to flow through your entire being. Each chant is more special than the next one. He received the most beautiful gift from the Indian culture which allows Westerners to bring this beauty into our lives. His command of the Chaleesa is unprescedented and anyone who has heard it remarks of a load being removed off their shoulders. The market is saturated with meditation audio material..but this is by far the most remarkable source of peace, tranquility and brotherhood for all man. Each one of us has our own copy and then there is the one that lives in the magazine for the car. We never leave home without Krishna Das and the ever changing possey.

When I first came across Krishna Das, I did not know what to expect. He was an intriguing enough subject. Here was a western Hindu convert, who had undertaken as his life mission the popularization of Bhakti Yoga - the path to eternal salvation through steadfast devotion, often expressed by the chanting of sacred hymns. I was familiar enough with the material. In fact, I was literally steeped in it, as a Hindu who had grown up in India. Nevertheless, I did approach the album with a mixed sense of curious apprehension (much akin to to the polite skepticism most Westerners would feel at the thought of a prodigy native Tibetan singing the Ave Maria, notwithstanding reputed prowess). And yes, like Latin, Sanskrit pronunciation can be quite difficult - even for many native Indians, let alone the western tongue.
But truth be told. Any doubts vaporized as I listened to Das's renditon of the first line of the first track on the first cd: "Radhe Radhe Radhe Shyam Govinda Radhe Jai Shree Radhe". A connection was made. Simply put, what followed was a three hour excursion to the inner depths of latent spiritual conciousness on the Dharma Spaceship. It would be a hapless exercise to try and further describe in words the deepest feelings of compassion, peace and fellowship that this music evokes. Experience the magic Krishna Das and join the family of universal love.

This CD offers several stellar chants that swept me away. The Shri Hanuman Chaleesa is incredibly beautiful. I am compelled to learn the 40 verses in order to sing along. I first heard a Krishna Das CD while practicing yoga. The ability to bring this richness into my daily life is a great honor. If you are seeking serenity, joy and beauty, I highly suggest you check out this double CD.

I have been a devotional singer for many years and have most everything that is available. I have all of KD's other releases and "Live on Earth" is his best work yet and I don't normally like live performances. With the exception of a few live "mistakes" that would normally be edit out, you wouldn't know this was a live CD.
LOE has both a perfectly balanced devtional and energetic feel to it which is the sign of a good kirtan/bhajan. Even my Indian devotional singing friends who are usually very picky when it comes to devotional music, all love "Live on Earth". Most all of KD's good tracks from his other releases are on LOE so with this you have his best. If you have only one KD CD, this is the one.

Krishna Das is wonderful and this live collection features a wide variety of his work. I play it at work constantly and my attitude is much improved. We also use this CD is a spiritual movement practice called estactic dance (Gabrielle Roth) and it works very well for the flowing and stillness rhythms. Highly recommend it!

I owned this collection for a few years and it disappeared into someone else's life who probabaly needed it at the time. I just rebought it because I found that I was longing for it. It is addictive listening and always makes me feel like I can walk on water and make miracles happen just by inhaling the vibration. When I listen to it I tend to spend the day putting things in order, cleaning house, and feeling light.

Krishna Das is amazing. He is universally recognized as the best at what he does, and this 2-disk set is full of his best work. If you only buy one kirtan style chant CD, this is the one I would recommend.

i loved this album and continuously listen to it to uplift my spirits in the car and at work. i was suprised to find that when i by chance played it in the office, it was quite catchy and everyone had fun listening to it and humming along. the simplistic and repetitious style makes it easy to sing along.
