4.0 out of 5 stars sophisticated and lively
I received this CD as a gift (and had never heard of Palmieri or his friends) but I am very pleased with the album. The arrangements are excellent and well suited to this particular style of music. I enjoy Latin rhythms and have a few other CDs in which a similar style is played, but I don't have any in which the music is so artfully arranged and presented. Rather...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little hotter please
This was a charity benefit concert and I suspect that the audience was not a typical audience for Latin Jazz. In live performances, musicians feed off the audience but I wonder how empathetic the audience actually was here. The playing is highly professional throughout but it too often lacks real passion. For this type of music, that's a no no.

Rather than simply let the horns blast or present a single guitarist (for example), Palmieri allows the music to follow its own path, a path which often courses up and down and in and out and right and left and soft and loud and bright in a satisfying, complete way. #4 (Dona Teri) in particular is beautiful. My only regret is that I didn't see this show live.

Overall, the music is always interesting and "Slowvisor" and "Camagueyanos y Habaneros" are excellent. But if you're curious about Eddie Palmieri and looking for a first purchase, the place to start is "Azucar Pa Ti".
