Biography

The American blues rock band Canned Heat, were formed in 1965 in California. They are probably best known for Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson's distinctive high pitched vocals, singing "Goin' up the Country" and "On the Road Again".

They released their self titled debut album after an appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, but it was their follow-ups that brought them their greatest success.

4.0 out of 5 stars Canned Heat on fire, February 25, 2007
This review is from: Live In Europe 1970 (Audio CD)
The music is great! Al Wilson is all over the record on harp, guitar and vocal. A really burning version of Sonny Boy's Bring it on home takes the price for best song. The quality of sound is not that great. No mastertapes were used. This is pure vinyl to CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canned Heat at their best, February 13, 2008

This is a fantastic CD, featuring Canned Heat at their best. A wonderful live album with all the improvisations that make 'boogie' better than the studio albums. Harvey Mandel, Bob Hite and Blind Al Wilson playing great stuff. I thoroughly recommend it!

This review is from: Live In Europe 1970 (Audio CD)
By 1970 Canned Heat was at a peak of their performing powers with: Bob Hite, Alan Wilson, Harvey Mandel and the ever pounding pulsations of bassist Larry Taylor standing on the frontline with Fito De La Parra just a few feet behind beating a drumkit to death in a boogie fever that wouldn't and couldn't be topped by any other band on the planet.

The Heat had a featured role in the Woodstock movie and the soundtrack LP's that followed their amazing appearance at the summer 1969 festival. "Going Up The Country" and "On The Road Again" made their way to the tops of record charts and have become staples of American radio ever since. With Bob Hite and Alan Wilson there was a perfect ying/yang in contrasts that made Canned Heat even more special as this was blues-cranked-up-to-ten that could destroy cities and floor listeners with it's onslaught that never let up.

This set from Europe features blues chestnuts: "That's All Right Mama" and "Bring it on Home" and the huge fan favorite: "On The Road Again" that churns and delivers total Heat boogie bliss. "London Blues" is a jam that turns hypo-boogie for this crazy and oh so very happy European audience.

The new hit for 1970: "Let's Work Together" is found as a part of this set and it's Alan being Alan as nobody can fill his shoes as a croaky blues craftsman that leads this bunch of wildmen. At the last notes of: "Goodbye For Now" this look-see into the live show of Canned Heat comes to a close and it's all over just too soon as you will want more. Canned Heat, were the godfather's of a type of music that will never go away (ask: ZZ Top!) This is true first-rate red-hot music that gets the butts outta their seats at every show. There is a bit of magic here as this is wonderful sampler of one of America's best groups. Canned Heat were livin' the blues as nobody else could, they were on top of it!
Four Stars!
