Unbelievably Funky ! ! !!, October 26, 2004
Who would have believed that Fela Kuti, at his peak circa a time he was so funky that even JAMES BROWN admitted copping stuff off his rhythm section would have made one of his best, most focused and funkiest albums with(get this...) CREAM'S Ginger Baker ?!?!?!? - - Though the words "great drumming" and Ginger Baker might go hand in hand, for this type of music you might have thought Bernard Purdie or Clyde Stubblefield... but GINGER BAKER ??? Well, life itself is a wonderous mystery... The two had met in London month's earlier... Fela, The Africa '70s and Ginger were clearly caught by the spirit... and luckily, Fela decided to play like Fela, and Baker clear dug and understood where he was coming from... The album is fused throughout with a level of spirit and energy that seem to build and build until you'd expect something to give (speakers or sound system to explode) - - Baker's drum battles with Tony Allen, backed by the Africa '70s incredibly tight and funky rhythm section definitely bring this album to incredibly high levels of funky, "rishi" and artistry.., My gosh, if music like this was common place, the earth would spin off its axis...
Yet another album in my collection that I first heard years and years ago and just seems to get better with time... and well recorded and mastered to boot !

Fela & Ginger...Let's Get Started!!, April 23, 2003
I heard Ginger Baker and Fela Ransome-Kuti for the first time at a Fraternity Party, I was 18 years old and had been experiencing lot's of different music. When I heard the song on this album, I just couldn't stop dancing! That was in 1970, now it's 2003 and I'm 53 years old and still can't stop dancing when I play it. These two guys were a match made in heaven. Each track had that heavy beat and lot's of tight horns in the background. I could just see myself in the middle of the crowd while they played. There is something magical about the sound of the drums and the echo of Fela's voice that hypnotized and mezmerized me until the whole album had played. Today I still feel that jolt when I play it. Now that's music that has and will forever stand the test of time. If this is the first time you have had the chance to listen to this album, make sure you have your dance partner with you. It's impossible to listen to all that funk and sit still.

Buyer Beware!, February 20, 2006
Yes this is one of the best, if not THE best, of Felas recordings. Why then have I only given it one star? For the simple reason that this Terrascape CD is, unless they have corrected their blunder, an absolute travesty. Why? Because, at least on my copy, purchased some 6 years ago, every single sax solo has been virtually eliminated from the mix. You can still here it way off in the distance but this, and I have the original vinyl to compare with, is NOT the original mix. I have played this CD on many different systems and the fault is definitely there. Be very careful before you buy this CD.
