LLB much better live than in the studio!,

Los Lonely Boys, like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana before them, can be great in the studio, but it's live on stage where they truly shine. What better way to prove it than releasing Live At The Fillmore, recorded in October of last year at the historic San Francisco concert hall. The band rips through many selections from its debut album, including Crazy Dream, Dime Mi Amor, and Real Emotions, and also throws on three songs not on the debut: Man To Beat, which showcases Henry's extraordinary harmonica talents, and covers of Ritchie Valen's La Bamba and War's Cisco Kid. Of note is also that Reese Wynans, the legendary keyboard player for Stevie Ray Vaughan's band Double Trouble, guests on keyboards for the whole show, and it is a welcome addition, because this guy is one of the greats of the ivories. Henry cooks it on the six string, especially on the Santana-inspired Onda, Jojo adds fills and keeps the beat, and Ringo pounds the hell out of the skins. And the harmonies on this cd are beautiful. The accoustics of the Fillmore really do add a layer to their already great harmonies. This can especially be heard on the acapella version of More Than Love and the smash hit Heaven. Overall, this is a great live cd, and one that I know I'll be listening to a long time.
IF YOU LONELIES AND LOOPIES LIKE LIVE TEXICAN ROCK AND ROLL, GIVE ME A HELL YEAH! LLB FOREVER!

"BAM" as Emeril would say. Los Lonely Boys have kicked it up a notch. If their debut cd was a "10" this is, as they say in Spinal Tap, "An Eleven". Very intense yet beautiful, as ripping guitar work from Henry Garza intertwines with the tight vocal harmonies. Mostly songs from their debut are played on this cd but at another level. In addition there is "La Bamba". I've never heard anybody do it better, "Cisco Kid" and their own original and fan favorite "Man to Beat". This cd will be on my player for a long time to come. There is no better music today than the "Texican Rock & Roll" on this "live" cd.

That's the opening cry of this great live performance by the best Mexican-American band since Los Lobos. The guitar work and harmony vocals are every bit as good as on their debut studio album - at times even better. If only the sound quality was as good as the artistry - it sounds tinny and boxy throughout. That's inexplicable in these days of digital recording, except for perhaps the desire to rush it into the market to fill the gap till the next studio album. But we can forgive that, because the Garza brothers still sound like they're cookin' with jalapenos - it's one of those live records that really make you wish you'd been there. All but three tracks are from their debut album - the exceptions are the original tune "Man to Beat", and a couple of great covers: "La Bamba" (following in the tracks of the aforementioned Los Lobos) and War's "Cisco Kid". (They also sneak in the harmonica lick from "Low Rider" during "Man to Beat".) Check out the 13-minute version of "Onda", which sounds more like a Santana tribute than anything else they do. So, despite my sound-quality reservations, and the fact that most of the tracks are live versions of the studio album, I highly recommend it - it's still the best live album I've heard in quite a while.
