Foreword read by Richard Florida
Book read by Rebecca Ryan

From Dr. Richard Florida s foreword to Live First, Work Second:

Live first, work second is a sentiment I often hear in my travels around the country and the world. Regardless of their zip code, their native language, or their vocation, members of the Creative Class place as much emphasis on where and how they live as where they work. It s a core premise of Rebecca s book, and a story that must be told.

In my experience in working with Rebecca and her team at Next Generation Consulting they are one of the most reliable sources for CEO s, mayors, legislators, economic developers, and non-profit leaders who want to attract and retain the next generation of creative workers to their community or organization.

In a very real way, Live First, Work Second helps us see our organizations and institutions through the lens of this newest crop of creatives, so that we can adjust and align in ways that will draw them in.

Let me be candid: I am a HUGE Rebecca Ryan fan. If you ve ever seen Rebecca speak, as I have, you know that she has engaging and cutting-edge style of giving companies, communities, and economies realistic and candid advice.

This is an amazing quality that has translated well to the pages of this book. This is important, because transformation is extremely difficult. But with guides like Rebecca who bring candor and humor to the process we can navigate and shape more relevant and engaging communities and companies for the next generation. This book is long overdue. Rebecca s is a clear and incredibly grounded and intelligent voice in our dialogues about creativity, innovation, and community development. I know you ll find her ideas as invigorating as I have.

After you ve read this book, get ready for the brain-storming tour that s sure to follow. I m in for the ride. We need your energy too.

Richard Florida

Editorial Reviews

Review

If you run a business, have a kid, are a kid, or are a community leader (elected officials and economic development-types especially!) please read this book. Rebecca has found her voice in her writing. Anyone lucky enough to have been to one of her talks, will enjoy the thoughtful humor that she uses to get her points across. This book is a fun and pleasurable read, and is also vitally important. A pretty damn good combination Rebecca! --Craig Scharton, CEO, Central Valley Business Incubator

I have been hauling my copy of Live First, Work Second, to every meeting I have had over the past few weeks. That has included, the ones that begin at 7:00 a.m. and those that finish at 10:00 p.m. Does that give away what group I fit in ? This is an "in your face", humorous and engaging look at what is happening when the generations collide. Very insightful and helpful. Thank you, Rebecca --Brenda Cameron Couch, Senior Advisor, Rural Communities, Rural Secretariat, Government of Canada, Ottawa

Hi. My name is Penny and I'm a Baby Boomer. There, I said it. If you are over 35 years old you should read this book. Parents, teachers, bosses, business school deans, co-workers, grandparents, and professors will all benefit from Rebecca Ryan's insight and wisdom. True to form, Ryan not only hits in on the head, she NAILS it! Think big picture. Think innovation. Think future. Think now. You are either in the game or on the bench. Read this book! If you are on the bench she'll show you how to be part of what is happening on the field. But don't stop with reading - implement - recreate yourself, your companies, your life. 5.0 out of 5 stars Interview on One On One, Louisville, KY, December 17, 2008
I just heard her talk about her research for Louisville, KY, (and since we are transplants here-from OR & WI), we were very impressed with her ability to latch on to the culture of this area. If this book contains the type of information she spoke of, it has to be dynamite and she is a very talented woman to assist communities with key improvements for future generations! Debbie Newhouse
