The next best thing to being there, April 8, 2009
This review is from: Live in Franklin, MA 2003 (Audio CD)
If you get a chance to see Greg Greenway live, run to get your tickets. I've seen many a folk act and he is a given every time he's in town, which for me is Tupelo Hall in Londonderry, NH. With Greg, the storytelling is never to "tell" you what the song means, rather to explain what he may have been thinking and feeling when he wrote it. Now, on to the CD.
Never afraid to laugh at himself, there are some very funny moments as in "Waterfall" or the comical "My Good Name" as well as "Don't Make Me Sing". Greg also handles the serious with equal skill, my personal favorites being "She's Just Gone", "Tennessee" and "You Don't Travel Like I Do". For a peek into who Greg is (at least I think so), "A Road Worth Walking Down" seems to encompass why he does this and also encourage the listener to contemplate their own life.
Patty Barkas has been singing with Greg for a long time and is a wonderful counterpoint to his voice, adding those angelic high harmonies that layer sparkle on top of Greg's. Go see Greg live. He is a master showman and a wonderful man to chat with. You will walk out of the show laughing, crying, and thinking.
