Editorial Reviews

'Live From Freedom Hall' (CD/DVD & DVD ) not only captures the band in its most natural state - on stage, but is also one of the last concerts to be recorded with longtime members Billy Powell and Ean Evans, both of whom passed away last year. The release is a tribute to and a celebration of Skynyrd. The set features all the classics including 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Free Bird.'

This is a great cd/dvd combo, recorded/filmed at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky on June 15, 2007, during their "Rowdy Frynds" Tour, which included some concerts with Hank Williams, Jr. I was fortunate to see this exact line-up of Skynyrd during this "Rowdy Frynds" Tour. At the beginning of the dvd, they honor those members of Skynyrd who were killed, or died (including Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson, & those who were killed in the plane crash). Johnny states this concert is performed, recorded, & filmed to commemorate the 30th aniversery of the 1977 plane crash, that killed his brother Ronnie, along with members Steve and Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick. Also, an important thing about this cd/dvd combo, is that you have the Bassist, Ean Evans, and Keyboardist/Original Member, Billy Powell in the "line-up". Both of these great members of Skynyrd, died after the filming/recording of this concert.

The dvd portion is better than the cd portion, in this "combo". The main focus of my review is on the dvd portion.

The line-up in this cd/dvd combo concert:
Gary Rossington - lead guitar, including slide
Billy Powell - keyboards
Johnny Van Zant - lead vocals
Rickey Medlocke - lead guitar
Ean Evans - Bass guitar
Mark Martejka - guitar (a former member of the Charlie Daniels Band)
Michael Cartellone - drums (a former drummer for Ted Nugent & The Damm Yankees)
Dale Krantz Rossington - backing vocals
Carol Chase - backing vocals

This concert cd/dvd combo includes, "Travlin' Man", it has the late/great Ronnie van Zant singing along with his brother Johnny on this one. Ronnie is shown on the big screen on the dvd.

Yay, just what the world needed, another live greatest classics hits release by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Look, I love Skynyrd, have for decades, but I am getting tired of people keeping Skynyrd stuck in a box from the 70's.

With the exception of three songs ("Travelin' Man" from 1997's album Twenty, "Workin'" from 1999's Edge of Forever release, and "Red, White and Blue" from 2003's "Vicious Cycle) this is 12 songs from the early days of typical classic they always play. I love the classics, but how many live albums of them do we need?

This band has put out album after album of great songs since their 1991 reunion. They have a large modern catalog of songs, which in my opinion are as good, and in many cases better, than the classics. When will the world move on and let the new band spread it's wings and fly? Sure, they need to play a few of the true classics in concert every time, but 12 out of 15 songs? I personally don't think so. The total track list for this release is as follows:

I would love to see a new live album with the reverse track listing....give me 12 new tracks and three classics. And radio stations don't help any. When was the last time you heard a new Skynyrd track on the radio?

Now, the thing that does make this release a little more special, is it is from one of the last recorded shows before the passing of long time keys player Billy Powell and bass player Ean Evans, both of whom passed in the early months of 2009, as well as a 30th anniversary of the place crash. So, this release is special in that matter, and the whole band still have the chops and work it hard as usual. You can pick this up in at least three formats: CD only, DVD only, or a CD/DVD combo set (which is what I grabbed).

I just wish the band would be recognized for the amazing music career they have had for the past 20 years, instead of forcing them to live in the past. I LOVE NEW SKYNYRD! (Original review appeared at [...])

What a great live CD and DVD. I mainly picked this up for the CD and have played it non-stop. I got this one at a Skynrd show a few years back and I am still playing it. All the hits are here live and full of power. This disc sounds just like the live show. If you like the power and magic of the new Skynrd lineup you will like this rocking disc! One super solid set by these great southern rockers great addition to any Skynrd collection. Great Songs, Great Performance and a CD/DVD set for one low prices is a great deal in my book.

This recording is referred to as a tribute, sometimes a salute, to members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who are no longer with us. That ought to be enough for anyone who respects the legacy of this band and what they did for Southern Rock. In their heyday Skynyrd set the standard for southern rock anthems and cut a path that many bands would follow on their own road to success. The legacy Skynyrd established has been carried on and resulted in this celebration of all that was, is and will be written in the history books long after all of us are long gone.

I read an interview done by Gary Rossington where he explained why Skynyrd is "stuck in a box". He explained that the band WANTS to perform the new songs, that they ARE tired of the same routine night after night, but that the people who buy the tickets DEMAND that they hear "the hits" and the band doesn't want to disappoint. There is only so much time that the band has when they are on stage and they try to fit in as much of the new material as they can, often resulting in a medley of songs as a way to make room in the setlist.

The video quality and the sound are excellent and any fan of Skynyrd will enjoy this, whether they openly admit it or not.
