Anyone that's ever heard one of the CDs they give away with BBC Music Magazine knows the sound is fantastic on them -- brilliant highs with exceptional lows and terrific all around sound. It's no different on this CD that mates an Elgar specialty with a wonderful recording of a Dvorak orchestral piece.

The music here is taken from two separate Proms concerts. Martyn Brabbins, an energetic conductor if there every was one, leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Elgar's "Falstaff - symphonic study". Like his "Enigma" variations, "Falstaff" is a group of 7 related orchestral movements tied together around the legend and activities of Falstaff, the fictional character from three Shakespeare plays.

Brabbins and the BBCSO are very energetic in this music -- far too much so for my taste -- and provide about 38 minutes' of music reminiscent of Elgar's mature style from the symphonies. You wouldn't confuse Brabbins high octane Solti-ish performance for Boult or Barbirolli but it may be appealing to fans that like speed. The orchestral execution is splendid. The recording was made during a proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall in Londong on August 3, 2000.

This is followed by Jiri Belohlavek leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in an outstanding reading of Dovrak's "Symphonic Variations", a 23-minute set of variations presneted here in two movements (the second movement is 4:25 duration and is called "Finale"). I can't say I've ever had much good to say about Belohlavek in the half-dozen or so recordings I've heard by him, but this one is clearly the best thing I've ever heard from him.

Conductor and orchestra come together to produce a highly idiomatic and exciting reading of music that is just not that often recorded.
