It's simple. When Getz does bop, he's amazing. When does he do it? On the early stuff. His earliest stuff is awesome bop. I wish during that whole period of the sixties and seventies when they tried to make hip records that related to the scene, that they made bop in between them. It simply holds up better. When you want unreal tone, then you go for later Getz. But everybody should have early Getz. It's beautiful stuff.

Stan Getz sitting in for Gerry Mulligan in the pianoless quartet of the early fifties. The sound quality is OK, much better than Stan At Birdland. At Storyville with Jimmy Rainey and Al Haig is good enough for me too. In retrospect you may be looking for Chet to lay out for at least a ballad or two but it doesn't happen. Stan doesn't seem up to it, though his technical genius is evident. As it is they play tunes like Yardbird Suite,Half Nelson,All The Things You Are,Whispering,What's New, Yesterdays. There's more, including a tune which may best describe the session for some -Soft Shoe. Well, it's not that soft. In all honesty Chet Baker and Crew with Phil Urso on tenor sax AT THE FORUM THEATRE swings out more.--Stan and Chet did a studio quintet session several years later STAN MEETS CHET using the same Haig photography but different coloring. The sound quality sounds more like a live recording than a studio session but Chet does lay out on one tune as Stan takes on Jor-Du with the rhythm section. J.Cristian is the pianist.
