As we all know, there are many Bibles available for our reading and study of God's Word. Not only are there various translations, but various formats - plain text, study Bibles, devotional Bibles, application Bibles...

Tyndale has a new Bible for teens, called "Live" It is different from anything I've seen before. It seems as though the publisher has made a really good effort at presenting the Bible in a way that relates to teens, many of whom are easily bored or distracted.

What makes it so unique?

It is the New Living Translation, a very fluid and readable translation.

The copy that I have is a paperback, although it seems to be available in hardcover or leather as well. The cover is a thick card stock and the pages are the typical thin paper found in most Bibles. The print is relatively small, but I don't know any teens who have issues with smaller type.

What makes the Bible different is the layout inside. This is not a study Bible with the same type of notes on every page, but there are features throughout. There are actually photos and drawings in this Bible! There are poems, quotes and stories from teens living out their faith. There are even planned spaces to doodle, draw pictures or write notes. Who would have thought?

A couple of other things that I appreciated that make this Bible accessible: The table of contents is alphabetical rather than by order that the books appear, so it's easy to hunt down a book quickly. The back has a Bible reading plan and some guidance on where to turn in the Bible during different times in life.

Lastly, the introductions to every book track Jesus through the Bible. In that regard, this Bible is truly Christ centered!

I love this version, I've grown up reading Bibles and have done a lot of research on my own as I prepare for pre-seminary, but this Bible actually made some verses suddenly make sense!! For example, Jesus was quoting Psalms 22- "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" when he was nailed to the cross, which is a chapter those around him would have known off the top of their heads! There are little thought-provoking paragraphs on every other page, explaining things like that, and asking you how you could apply things to your world. There is room to write and underline, but the pages are so beautiful I hate to write over the watermarks. The color-picture pages every couple hundred pages can be annoying, sometimes they stick up straight when I'm reading pages around them, but the pictures and poems they write on them are really fabulous. I did find a page where the cross-reference notes (EVERYTHING is cross-referenced, which is really neat) weren't there, I think it was in 2 Kings. Not a huge deal, I believe it was something about "in Greek it means __". Every chapter opens with a summary or intro, a Who, What etc. a Key Verse, and "7 Degrees of Jesus" which shows you how every book in the Bible points to Jesus Christ. The concordance has SO much info and many verses, and I can't wait to use some of the Jesus-Sightings and Express Yourself ideas with my small-girls group!!

Tyndale mailed me a copy of the Live teen bible to do a review of. And the first word that comes to mind is tasteful. The Live bible is a a mix of the full NLT bible with photos, devotional poetry, study questions with a dash of a teen oriented devotional intermixed. The closest analogy I can think of is the Revolve bible (see inside) And "the revolve done better" is I think a fair way to describe this bible. There is nothing garish about this bible at all, which is a difficult line to walk mixing both extra interest and the bible in a layout that is fun but resptful. For example the non biblical text is separated off from the biblical text using different background colors and fonts so no one is likely to confuse the two (see inside view). One major distinction is that the Live bible is aimed at both sexes and there are no explicitly girl or boy topics.

This is not a study bible (though Tyndale makes a very good NLT Study bible) but it does include a reasonable concordance, daily reading plan and 6 page topical study guide. The concordance is an abridged version of the one from the study bible, where a substantially smaller percentage of the words are linked through but this is probably good enough to get a teen used to using concordance. The reading plan is very abridged with one selected chapter being read each day, so aiming for 5 min per day or less. The check boxes next to the books I think are a good touch. There is the topic index and this does appear to be all new material, based on the sorts of issues likely to confront a teen/tween. While short this does seem useful. Finally the pages themselves are marked on the lower outer margin with the chapter number which is useful for inexperienced bible reader's navigation, a very good feature one rarely finds in any book anymore.

This is a great Bible, but my only complaint is that I don't feel that it's inclusive of every teenage culture. I feel the editor's could've done a better job of including photos of teens/people of all races. God's Kingdom is comprised of everyone and I just wish that was reflected more in the images inside this particular teen Bible. It's helpful that as teens read this Bible they would also see themselves reflected in it, I believe this would make this Bible more identifiable for them.
