Simply an amazing night of music caught on tape. Small club but a HUGE sound. Mavis and background singers in tiptop form. Holmstrom, Hodges and Turmes crankin' out the TONE.
From Hodges backwards grooves and percussion to Holmstrom and Turmes TONE and then over to Mavis's stories. This record is a MUST HAVE in my book. My current favorite band does not disappoint here. A+++ sound quality for a live record too! Don't wait, if you are a fan of anyone on this record, a fan of Mavis's, a fan of DEEP SOUL....do yourself a favor and pick this cd up.

Mavis - Need I Say More?,

This review is from: Live: Hope At The Hideout (Audio CD)
In the entire history of Soul Music, only two people can get down deep and grab your soul; twist and turn it inside out; then, hand it back to you thoroughly cleansed, steamed, pressed and awakened to a new consciousness of the struggle African-Americans have wrestled with for the past 400+ years. They are Sam Cooke and Mavis Staples.
It's all there in this 'live' CD - the pain, frustration, sorrow and joy of a people who refuse to give up the fight. Mavis brings it all together with her incredibly rich alto to contralto intonations from her gut-wrenching delivery on "Waiting For My Child" to her eerie rendition of "Down In Mississippi" and the jubilantly hopeful "I'll Take You There". It's all there - Mavis at her best! With just a trio of fine musicians - especially guitarist Rick Holmstrom - 3 super backup singers - including sister Yvonne Staples, Mavis delivers a cornucopia of some of the finest music reflecting "The Struggle". Simply put, Mavis Staples is a living-breathing-singing piece of 20th Century American History. Mavis was THERE; and, thankfully, she's still here to share it all with us. "The Voice" still shines though any cloudy day. Simply magnificent!

Staples voice will knock you out. One of the queens of the blues. "Down in Mississippi" in particular is haunting but all the songs will rock your world.

Out standing vocals from Mavis Staples. She is very comfortable with this gospel/blues/civil rights theme. Great backing band with a brilliant guitarist. This has become a personal favourite. Authentic message well presented by this group.

After seeing Mavis perform live, with this same band, less than a week ago, doing many of the same songs, I can say that this live album absolutely captures the spirit of that performance. Mavis is timeless and incredibly moving, and her band brings the goods as well- especially the haunting, shimmering guitar work that perfectly matches Mavis's vocal intensity . The sound quality is also great. Get this album and receive a musical education!

Mavis Staples is one of the great voices of R&B and gospel. When she sings "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize" you can feel the history and passion in her voice and that's because she's lived her songs. During the civil rights marches she was on the front lines with both her body and that great, inspirational voice. Give her a listen people and realize how far we've come with little more than songs and a prayer. Mavis Staples is truly a national treasure.

Every cut on this CD is fabulous. Guitarist Rick Holmstrom (sp) is out of this world. I immediately loved the songs I'm familiar with as well as the songs that were new to me. I can do some serious housework while playing this CD. Would love to see them live!

More swampy than Creedence Clearwater Revival - and that's saying a lot. Kudos to all the musicians, especially guitarist Rick Holmstrom and Mavis.
Just put it on and luxuriate in the groove and the feel-good factor of the lyrics as delivered by a bona fide civil rights hero. Hell, just thinking about this recording makes me feel good! Classic!

This album makes me feel better every time I listen, and it's partially due to the sheer joy her singing seems to exude. Her voice and her band are both stellar as she maneuvers through this set. Great example of what a live album should be, and I hope to catch one of her rare live shows.
