Swinging Chamber Jazz,
By
This review is from: Live Hot Jazz (Audio CD)
This outstanding CD is the long awaited and very welcome re-issue of an LP originally issued on the obscure Statiras label. It features trio performances by Kenny Davern (clarinet), the great Dick Wellstood on piano, and Chuck Riggs (drums). Self recommending to Wellstood & Davern fans, it is a fine showpiece for the almost supernatural understanding that existed between them.
As the title implies, the CD was recorded live, in 1983, and is a companion volume to "Stretchin' Out" (also available on Jazzology). The repertoire is typical of Davern and Wellstood - a mixture of standards and more obscure pieces from the 1920s and 1930s. Highlights here are a wonderful "Who's Sorry Now" (where Wellstood's solo moves from McKenna - like single note bass work into full blooded stride), beautifully swinging performances of "Lady Be Good" and "Rosetta", and an outstanding "Beale St. Blues" featuring Davern at his impassioned best. The loss of Wellstood at the age of 59 in 1987 was a devastating loss for jazz. This excellent CD reminds us how much he is missed. Strongly recommended.
