Great for Thrice Fans,

This review is from: Live At The House Of Blues (MP3 Download)
Having been a long-time Thrice fan, and a big supporter of the evolution of their sound (starting with their punk-infused roots to their more mature layered synth rock of late) I really like this album.
I am typically not a fan of live albums at all, with their often horrible production value, all-too-often sub-par live band performance, and annoying audience noises interfering with the music. Live at House of Blues does not suffer this same detriment, for the following reasons: - Thrice is a superb live group, that captures the sound of their studio performances, while adding subtle differences in the recording that thankfully do not make it sound like a completely different song. Very tight performance by Thrice. - Production value of the recording might as well be studio; great fidelity, and there is only one few-second segment that has any sort of unintended feedback. - Audience is very into the music, singing along but never to the point where you hear the audience more than the band. It's sort of like a group backing vocal track, and it works well for this album. I was fortunate enough to see Thrice during this particular tour (though I saw them at the Avalon in Hollywood, instead of this House of Blues show) and it was easily one of the top three most amazing shows I've ever been to. Thrice is a spectacular live band, and their latest shows were a testament to their maturity as live performers, with perfectly mixed audio and impeccably timed LED lighting that synced so amazingly with the music, one would think the sound and visual choreography were written at the same time. I have the utmost respect for Thrice as a band, Dustin's unashamed faith that pervades the inspirational and moving lyrics in such allegorical ways, and their ability to impress me with their ever-evolving sound. While it contains no unreleased songs, Live At The House Of Blues provides a good mix of new Alchemy-era tunes and old favorites for new fans looking to get a slice of Thrice, and long-time followers who are looking to complete their collection.

Almost what I was waiting for.,
This review is from: Live at the House of Blues (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
The only thing that keeps this dvd from being perfect is the video editing. When there's back up singing or someone's instrument is standing out, the camera seems to always focus on Dustin. During the earth will shake you never really get to see the Bassist scream too much because it's always on the crowd or Dustin, which doesn't even make since. Besides that, the quality of the footage is nice and the set-list is near perfect, but you cannot complain with 25 songs. Highlights for me were:
-Firebreather -Burn the Fleet -Broken Lungs -Silhouette -For Miles -The Earth Will Shake -Trust The interview does seem a little rushed and music videos would have been nice, but just the live concert is enough to satisfy me. This dvd shows what Thrice can do as a band as far as diversity and still be able to rock hard live while sounding amazing. I still give it 5 stars because it's Thrice playing 25 songs.

One of the best live DVDs I've ever seen...,

Thrice delivers TWENTY FIVE songs! I bought the newest Black Keys live dvd a week before this one and it only had 17 (which isn't bad either but the songs are allot shorter and quality is MUCH worse) for the same price (PLUS 2 CD of the whole set). Great quality, especially for a mid sized band in a smaller venue. I also disagree with the previous reviewer about the bonus interview. I thought the answers were very in depth and the questions where interesting and unique.
I consider this a terrific buy! Thrice is even better live..An amazing band.

First of all, if you've never heard this band before, give them a listen. Thrice is one of the few bands these days that produce a different sound from album to album. They're not one of those bands the make the same record. I've been a fan since the first time I heard them, and through time they became my favorite band. So when I first heard they were making a DVD i was extatic. This CD/DVD is full of awesome music, and captures the best Thrice show I've been to. The only problem I have with the DVD is that it's 80% Dustin. Don't ge me wrong, Dustin is amazing, but I was hoping for near-equal camera time for all band members. I wanted see more of Riley's drum solos, Ed's sick bass strumming, and Teppei's amazing guitar.

If you enjoy Thrice and have been listening to the since the beginning it is a must own DVD. Its 25 songs of both new and old songs, I have seen them live 4 times before and it has just as much energy and emotion as any other time. The best $16 I have spent in awhile, you get 2 CDs and an DVD for the price of one CD.

This is one incredible DVD. There is a very good balance of new material and older songs. It is very interesting to see how the band pulls off playing their recent more technical and electronic songs in a live setting. Most concert DVDs i will find one or two songs where i think....man, they could have done a better song then that! but all the songs played in this set were awesome. while i would have liked to see certain other songs from their extensive catalog, there wasnt one song in their set that i would have taken out. like the title says, this is a must buy for any real thrice fan. The Q&A bonus footage is very interesting. It is about an hour of solid question and answers, but the answers they give are very insightful and intriguing. The Q&A isnt as much for entertainment purposes as it is for educational and intellectual purposes. so dont expect to sit down with a bowl of popcorn to watch the bonus stuff with ur buds.
All in all, this was wwwweellll worth the money and i recommend it to any fan of the band.

Can not believe how off the mixing is in this DVD!!! This had the potential to be amazing, but it pisses me off every time I put it in. Vocals are totally drowned out. Thrice is still amazing but its a let down

This Isn't Thrices Best Show,
This review is from: Live at the House of Blues (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
I just want to say that for those that might not find this DVD "Amazing."
I've been following Thrice since they released Artist and have heard everything they've ever made since or before. Probably been to about 6 or 7 Thrice shows, and was there the night before they recorded this one. Love the band, love the music, (I've even contemplated a Thrice tattoo) but this DVD is not up to par and does not meet the quality that i've come to know as Thrice, IMHO. There's about 45 minutes of Q&A that are just "there," they don't even look interested. You'd think that because they had the opportunity to make a DVD, they'd do some really cool stuff, but it really just comes off as unplanned. Some other notes: -You get to hear Dustin complain about Thrice's name, AGAIN (dude, give it up). -Some questions aren't even answered (why'd they pick those questions then?) -Maybe its the quality of the recording (so you can hear better detail), but a couple songs were really lagging (and when I've seen them live its never been like that). I mean, seriously, when I've seen them live its like they literally hit every freakin note, and for some reason here there wasn't perfection (cause Thrice fans know, perfection is what these guys have always been about when they play live). Which is one reason I wasn't too bummed when I realized I missed the recording night. Yeah I'm not in the DVD, but it sure seemed like the show I saw was a lot better! Bought it presale and got the limited edition shirt, which is pretty sweet. But tack on 7 bucks shipping and it cost me 30 bucks total, so if you get one for 15 flat or less, I'd say its a damn good deal. This thing will still get you in the moment wanting to mash in front of your TV the whole time, I mean, it IS Thrice playing live! I'll be at a Thrice show again sometime soon anyway + Highlights: -Listening to Riley talk during the Q&A, LOL! -The Messenger, Digital Sea, Red Sky, Dont Tell and We Won't Ask |
