"I wanna hear your big voices Houston...",
By
This review is from: Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour (Audio CD)
Live in Houston has the same exact live feeling as Captured. The only difference between this and Captured other than the songs is that it doesn't fade out, it just goes straight into the next song like listening to the concert live. Once again like Captured, it has Steve Perry making the audience sing along and clap to certain songs but one song in particular, "Lights", He says "I wanna hear your big voices Houston" and I just, for some strange reason, lose it and just start cracking up, I don't know why. I guess it's just funny to me. The album has all the pre-Escape Journey classics and good amount of the new Escape material. One song in particular didn't make the cut which kind of made me sad and that was "Still they Ride". I wonder why they didn't put it on or even if they performed it live at that show, I guess I'll have to research it more. Live in Houston is a great live album like Captured. I feel that it rivals Captured in many ways but at the same time I feel that the two are even. I always wondered why this concert was such a big deal, but I guess it was the only concert they recorded from that era.

Journey has always been my very favorite of all the American rock bands. I've traced them right from the beginning because of being a Santana fan. Neil Shon and Greg Rollie started something that was very addictive. When Steve Perry joined the band, that was it. No singer can or could ever replace Steve Perry. Without SP, Journey isn't Journey. This live set just blew me away and the DVD that came with it is out of this world. It's too bad that Journey seems to be at the end of their journey. I highly recommend this set to any Journey fan even if you already have a live Journey CD, this is by far the best of all of them. Don't do what I did though. Order the set that has both the CD and DVD. It is well worth the money.

Great Live Document Of Journey's Biggest-Selling Tour,
By
This review is from: Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour (Audio CD)
LIVE IN HOUSTON 1981: THE ESCAPE TOUR is a wonderful document of a single concert on Journey's tour in support of their 1981 album ESCAPE, and it's great to have the concert available on CD, as the album and its ensuing tour were Journey's best sellers both in terms of album sales and concert tickets. The previously-recorded live album, CAPTURED, featured Gregg Rolie, whereas this one features Jonathan Cain on keyboards. It has been said that the band's manager, Herbie Herbert, didn't really like Cain, but that's irrelevant, as Cain brought more of a pop feel to the band. This is a CD that anyone who's even remotely interested in Journey should own.

I've really enjoyed this over and over again! I'm a huge fan of the band when Steve Perry was on vocals! I also thought "Mother, Father" was awesome! Everyone should watch this!

It sounds great and well mixed.
I could tell in the 2nd song that Steve Perry went back and added some backing vocals. His voice is distintive and there is no mistaking it. Cain, Valory and Schon are capable backing vocalists, so why was this necessary?

This is the way that concerts were meant to be performed. Powerful, talented, passionate musicians and singers. Folks in todays entertainment world should watch this and emulate it.

Magical Period,

This period for Journey, from '79 - '82 was incredible for the band. Major success, major tours and incredible music. I am not a huge Journey fan or a big classic rock guy, but I can tell when a band is on all cylinders.
I grew up constantly hearing this stuff, and though I liked it, I never saw the big deal with this band back then. And though I am a Metal Head at heart and listen to Progressive Rock/Metal for the most part, there is no denying that Journey were a great live band in 1980 and beyond. This disc is a total reminder of that fact. Especially when this Escape tour was going on. Steve Perry sings his heart out here, the band is very tight and the sound quality is stellar. You can feel the energy that a good live CD can bring when you listen. I own all of 2 Journey discs in my 1100+ CD collection, this and Escape. Its usually not my thing, but there was something truly magical about these albums that really brings you back when you listen to them now. Everything they touched in this 80's period was gold. There is a reason for that. Great Great music and atmosphere. This disc is a must have for all Classic Rock and Journey Fans. The songs speak for themselves. 90% of these songs were hits, so you shouldn't need a break down of the track list. Just think back to those old Live MTV videos and that is what you get on this Live disc. A truly great, sincere performance and a bunch of great memories.

Retrospect Journey,

Aside from Wheel in the Sky and a couple other songs, this 1981 live disc doesn't do much for me, though Christian metal music is my favorite kind of music now that I'm born again.
