Editorial Reviews

2006 reissue of this live album (originally a two LP set, issued in 1981) features Axton's regular touring band with guest James Burton and was recorded in the early 80's before Hoyt began his career in movies. Axton takes the opportunity to revisit some of his best-known songs, including 'Della & The Dealer', 'Joy To The World', 'Never Been To Spain' and 'No No Song' (a hit for Ringo Starr), alongside covers of Chuck Berry's 'Maybelline' and the Carter Family's 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken?'. Features lyrics plus sleevenotes by Alan Robinson. Edsel.

If you like Hoyt Axton's music this is a must have album. If you don't know about Hoyt's earlier work, this may be the absolute best introduction there is! I first bought this on 8 track in the 70s, and played it til I wore it out. I got it on casette, now I'm glad to find it on CD. You will NEVER get tired of this. The "Bus Story" alone is worth the price, and "Old Greyhound" is one of my all time favorites. "Wild Bull Rider" is as up-beat & timely today as it was way back then. Do yourself a favor, get this while you can, 'cos it might not always be available.

When I was a kid, my parents would pop this album in the cassette player and we'd listen to it while traveling somewhere. Hoyt Axton's deep, relaxing voice would fill the car and we'd enjoy the trip. His stories in between the songs are amusing and mostly (apart from a few alcohol/drug references) family friendly.

I was pleased to find this album available on CD, and quickly purchased it when I did. It's everything I remember from my youth (without the cassette hiss or kerchunk noises of the tape side changer).

In terms of the recording quality, it's always sounded to me like a cross between a studio recording and a live recording. There is clearly an audience there, and they get a little rowdy in places, but the quality of the vocals and instrumentals is on par with a studio recording... at least to my untrained ears.

If you like Hoyt Axton's music, and wonder what it might have been like to see him live, you'll enjoy this album. Many of his more popular songs are on there, as well as a variety of silly stories. It still cracks me up to hear him describe Ayatollah Khomeini as "The Halitosis Khomainikee"... even though my step-kids have no idea who Hoyt is or who he's talking about.
