Editorial Reviews

Two CD set includes two DVDs and booklet. David Gilmour Live in the Gdansk Shipyard with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This is the first solo live album from Pink Floyd's singer / guitarist, and it captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 people as the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 'On An Island Tour.' It features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra. Produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes' and 'A Great Day For Freedom,' the latter performed here as a one off for this special Solidarity anniversary. Playing at this historic concert is Richard Wright - Pink Floyd's keyboard player, Phil Manzanera, Roxy Music guitarist & coproducer of 'On An Island', Guy Pratt -bass player with Pink Floyd & Roxy Music Jon Carin -keyboards & longtime player with Pink Floyd, Steve Di Stanislao - drums, recently with Crosby and Nash, Dick Parry -saxophone and longtime Pink Floyd collaborator.

My husband LOVES this CD/DVD.
Bev Collard
As most can guess, each performance of music is always different - each time it is reinterpreted, caressed and massaged into perfection, yet unique.
Thomas D. Gulch
It is very cheap for a set with 2 cd's and 2 excellent dvd's.

many of the songs from this concert are same as from the last dvd, 'remember that night'.the question then becomes - so what? As most can guess, each performance of music is always different - each time it is reinterpreted, caressed and massaged into perfection, yet unique. This is the case with Live in Gdansk, and my reaction was one of sheer aural bliss.
I thought the ending of 'take a breath' was transcendent, with Gilmours' and his friends' playing with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orch. was literally stunning. Gilmour's voice is dark chocolate silk on my favorite 'pocketful of stones'. Richard Wright, his last appearance unfortunately, god bless this angel and may he rest in eternal joy, received a roar from the crowd who then broke into a chant of 'richard..richard..' . If you can stay dry eyed after that you are a stronger person then I am.
'Astronomie Dominé' and 'echoes' are simply astounding, aurally perfect.
Gilmour once again soars into comfortably numb, which has been voted the best guitar solo ever performed. These cd's and DvD's are simply something no floyd fan could possibly afford to miss.
the number of songs in this dvd + cd, with the dvd performances of the other included excerpts from concerts and the barn jams, the documentaries, make this set worth every penny it cost.
I don't know how many more concerts can be expected from Gilmour, many of us are getting a bit older, but 'pulse', 'remember' and this concert from Poland are simply gifts that i have been privileged to have experienced. thank you David.

David Gilmour, well known as the singer and guitarist of Pink Floyd, just released his new live 3-CD/2-DVD collection entitled Live in Gdansk and is a MUST for all DG and PF fans.
There's 2-CDs which feature 23 songs from his Gdansk, Poland performance recorded at the Gdansk Shipyard on August 26, 2006. 15 of the 23 songs (marked with *) are on the third disc and the first of two DVDs in this set which also has a documentary and webpass to download 13 tracks (including "Wots...Uh the Deal (performed at the Gdansk show but left off the CDs for time constraints) on this set).
Gilmour for this last show on his On an Island tour is backed onstage by PF 1987 alum which were keyboard player Jon Carin and bass player Guy Pratt, Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, drummer Steve DiStanislao and the recently deceased Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright. Plus, there's appearances by Zbigniew Preisner (who did the orchestrations and conducts the Baltic Symphony Orchestra) and Leszek Mozdzer on piano.
CD one begins with four from Dark Side of the Moon which are "Speak to Me", "Breathe", "Time" and "Breathe (Reprise)" (all are excellent versions). The next ten tracks are the On an Island* portion of the show this time with an orchestra. "Castellorizon" is amazing. "On An Island" is superb (even without Crosby and Nash's harmonies). "The Blue" trumps the studio version. "Red Sky at Night" is more haunting live with orchestra and Jon Carin's Lap Steel playing counterpointing Gilmour's rare sax playing appearance. Next is a jazzy but rocking "This Heaven". We follow with "Then I Close My Eyes" (with lap steel replacing Robert Wyatt's cornet) and an excellent version. "Smile" is superior to studio counterpart. "Take A Breath" is excellent here. "A Pocketful of Stones" is also superb.

Pink Floyd fans have been on a roller coaster of emotions in the first part of the 21st Century, and this excellent document takes us back to An Island of Pink Floyd and Gilmour/Wright magic one last time. It is the final encore for Richard Wright, one of the greatest (and humblest) musical geniuses of all time (despite being a founding member of Pink Floyd and deserving a co-billing with David Gilmour, he chose to let David Gilmour have sole billing)and the last spark of the Pink Floyd magic flame, which has sadly gone out at this time with the passing of Wright. David Gilmour still has many great albums in him, and Roger Waters is still making new music, but without Wright, there will be no more great Floyd music.
In 2005, Floyd fans got a surprise that brought our moods up and raised our hopes when the classic line up got together one last time at Live 8. Even though it was a farewell performance, there was a chance another world changing event would bring the band back together for another brief performance.
Then the first sucker punch of Syd Barrett's passing smashed away the mysterious character that we all hoped would at least come out one last time to play something before going into hiding again. That would never happen now.
Then, David Gilmour's On An Island hit the shelves. I bought it just because I am a fan of PF and wanted to see what Gilmour was up to. I expected it to be a decent album. It was not. It was an outstanding album that, despite not being called Pink Floyd, was more like pink Floyd's classic sound that anything since Wish You Were Here. It hearkened back to Pre DSOTM Floyd in a big way. It was another great peak on the roller coaster ride.

Will the 3CD / 2DVD version be issued in the US?
This won't help answer the question much, since I don't know about the availability of each package here in the US either, but I do have a possible alternative for high import costs:

If the 3CD/2DVD version is what we are after, and it will not be available in the US, I suggest waiting a little... Read More

The 5 disc version at Best Buy
Man, I wish the CDs and DVDs were in jewel cases, at least the really thin (slim) jewel cases you get with blank CDs at the store. I put my Joshua Tree CDs (the deluxe box version from last year) in thin cases and then put those in the box. I'll have to do the same for the Gilmour discs, if they... Read More

"Gdansk" Blu-Ray?
It will probably get a blu-ray release since I just saw a hd broadcast of the Gdansk concert on satellite.

DVD video of concert
One DVD has video of the concert and the other has rehearsal/jam footage and an audio only 5.1 surround mix of the "On An Island" album. Unfortunately, the first DVD does not contain the entire show and I'm hopeful there will someday be a Blu-ray release with the full show.

DVD -region 1 or region 2 or all regions
The North American release is region 0, but it may only play well in the U.S., Japan, and parts of North and South America because it is NTSC. It is not region encoded, and I find most of Sony BMG's videos for North America are not region encoded.
