Editorial Reviews

Live In Germany was recorded at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany for the Rockpalast TV series (released on DVD as Double Down Live in October 2009 (EV302869)). Hot on the heels of their classic Deguello album (it features 9 of the 10 songs from it) the show finds ZZ Top before sequencers and synthesizers epitomizing their lil' ol' blues band from Texas nickname. Complimented by tracks drawn predominantly from their Tres Hombres and Fandango! albums this is a true best of ZZ Top in the seventies.

Biography

This sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas consists of Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums). They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them ... Read more in Amazon's ZZ Top Store

LIVE IN GERMANY 1980 is a great recording of ZZ Top before MTV changed their sound and style. This CD captures them as a pure blues-rock band, with all the spontaneity of their early days evident on a mixture of songs from TRES HOMBRES, FANDANGO!, TEJAS, and the then-recent DEGUELLO albums. Unlike LIVE FROM TEXAS, which focuses too much on their later, MTV-era material, this CD is raw, meaty, in-your-face heavy boogie. This CD is a must-own for any rock & roll fan.

This ZZ TOP "Rockpalast" Essen Germany audio and video has been in trading circles for the last 31 years, give or take. I just checked out the DVD on my computer and it appears to be awesome video and the sound seemed ok too. I'm not a person with a fancy sound system and I really can't rate dvd audios as some people can. I can only tell you if I think the audio sounds good or if I hear some issues. So I will stick with some facts as I see them. The dvd is longer and has 22 tracks. The CD has 16 tracks but really the one called "El Deguello" is some stereo track that was played over the PA for the crowd just prior to the boys coming onto stage. So the first track on the cd is not really a track at all. The DVD also does NOT list "El Deguello" .The cd lists this so called track to make the audio cd setlist look longer. The inclusion of "El Deguello" in the audio setlist is the ILLUSION OF MORE. So the CD really only has 15 tracks. That being said I like the tune "El Deguello". Note also it is NOT a ZZ TOP song. So, enough said, below are the songs that the cd DELETES so the show can be sold on one cd. I see the wisdom of not asking fans to purchase a two cd set since it would cost a good bit more. I paid $9 for this single cd at Walmart.

Songs missing from the Essen, Germany 1980 show:
1) I'm Bad I'm Nationwide
2) Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings
3) El Diablo
4) She Loves My Automobile
5) Hi Fi Mama

The ENCORE is MISSING TOO:
6)Tube Snake Boogie
7) Just Got Paid

I encourage music fans to support ZZ TOP. These TRES HOMBRES are probably the BEST rock trio to ever ROCK an audience. And even in 2011 the band is still brilliant live and I should know because I have downloaded a half a dozen of their live shows.

.........just got paid today and bought this little jewel. This has been out on DVD for a couple of years, but now, finally, here it is on CD. This is a fabulous live snapshot of the little ol' blooz'n'boogie band from Texas before the MTV era. It's rough and ready and bursting with vibrancy. I love the warts'n'all spontaneity of a live gig in toto, and with the lack of live material of ZZ Top in their hay day this, my friends, is a nugget from a mine yet to be, well....mined.

Simply the best concert of ZZ Top; i bought a tape-copy of the bootleg in early 80's and my car's cassette ate it after thousand of listenings. If you want to know how simple is rock'n'roll this album is a must.

This show was featured in the 'Double Down Live' DVD set in its entirety. This CD is missing some of those tracks including my favorite 'Just Got Paid.' (I'm sure the whole concert would have required a second audio CD to fit it all on.) To be on the safe side, compare the DVD concert with this CD before buying.

This was the first German and European appearance of the little old band.. Came shortly after the release of Deguello. There was an interview with the 3 guys in a German guitar magazine the weeks before.
We watched the whole show and for years I had a bootleg tape until it disappeared. I was so glad when this finally came out. Just starting with the opener I think some spaghetti western soundtrack. I still remember the night in front of the TV. If you have any connection to ZZ top this is an album to get. And its the old style zz top concert with a lot of bs in it like during "Fool for your stockings". Get it and cry you were not awake that night to watch it live or in front of the TV.

I liked the set list the band chose for their second live album (but the first recorded). However, it is hard for a three piece band to duplicate the studio sound.

I love all things ZZ, but it's sort of interesting how their sound changed over the years, even with the same songs.
Compared to the recent Live In Texas release, this album is very different. Obviously Billy's voice has changed over the years, but so has the tempo of the songs and their instruvments. This album is a much higher tempo throughout and Billy's guitar has a clarity that the fuzzbox has since replaced. Dusty sounded tighter and I daresay, I heard some drum fills in songs. It's definitely worth a listen if you're an old school ZZ fan.
