Biography

Since emerging on the NYC café circuit in 2001, this Russian-born, Bronx-bred artist has been hailed as a truly special talent. With an uninhibited imagination and acute sense of detail both in music and words, Regina Spektor has gone from practicing on an out of tune piano in the basement of her local synagogue to hypnotizing small crowds in NYC's lower East Side to selling out ... 'Spektor put on one of the most intensely joyful rock shows we've seen all year.' --Rolling Stone

'Everything she did was greeted with thunderous applause... the audience could not get enough. Perhaps what was most remarkable about Regina's performance, aside from hearing Spektor's gorgeous vocals in person, was her ability to enrapture the crowd... Spektor's passion, vitality and sheer musical talent transformed the Electric Factory into a world of intimacy.' --The Philadelphia Inquirer

'multi-talented Spektor is capable of anything and it shows on stage.' --The Boston Globe

Product Description

'LIVE IN LONDON' is the first live recording and concert film from acclaimed artist Regina Spektor. Captured mainly at London's famed Hammersmith Apollo Theatre, 'LIVE IN LONDON' features 23 remarkable performances that span Spektor's brilliant catalog of music, including three new songs that have only been performed live ('Silly Eye-Color Generalizations,' 'Bobbing For Apples and Love' and 'You're A Whore'). 'LIVE IN LONDON' was recorded during Regina's UK tour in support of her latest album, 'far,' which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200.

For the first time, fans can see Regina up close as she performs fan favorites like 'Us,' 'Fidelity,' 'Samson' and 'Eet,' along with backstage footage, inside peaks at sound check and more. 'LIVE IN LONDON' is a captivating 64-minute concert film directed by Adria Petty.

An artist praised for her remarkable originality, inspired storytelling and enthralling performances, Rolling Stone raves, 'Spektor put on one of the most intensely joyful rock shows we've seen all year.' The Philadelphia Inquirer adds, 'Everything she did was greeted with thunderous applause... the audience could not get enough. Perhaps what was most remarkable about Regina's performance, aside from hearing Spektor's gorgeous vocals in person, was her ability to enrapture the crowd... Spektor's passion, vitality and sheer musical talent transformed the Electric Factory into a world of intimacy.' The Boston Globe simply says, 'multi-talented Spektor is capable of anything and it shows on stage.'

'LIVE IN LONDON' is dedicated to Regina's cellist and bandleader Daniel Cho, who tragically passed away this summer.

'LIVE IN LONDON' will be offered on CD+DVD, CD+Blu-Ray, Vinyl and Digital formats.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid first outing on Blu-ray for Spektor November 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Regina's performance is a strong one in this first concert Blu-ray of hers from a London show. She sings and plays well throughout. The standout for me might be "Hotel Room," even though it's not a favorite song of mine. At least in the main feature. "Love, You're a Whore" is a lot of fun, even if it's relegated to the special features.

The only major problem I had with the concert as a whole is that all of her conversations with the audience were cut. That's been a major part of the fun for me when I've seen her in concert. She can be very serious when she's playing, but then it's broken up by absolute, endearing graciousness in between songs when she engages the crowd. She doesn't always talk a ton at every performance, but I'm sure we were cheated out of some stuff that would have made the concert work better for me. I know there are people who only want the music, but I'm not one of them.

The video is nice and clean. There are a ton of close-ups of Regina singing and playing, and they're always perfectly clear.

Likewise, the audio is also very clean. I've been looking forward to a Regina Spektor concert on Blu-ray for quite some time, and neither the video nor the audio disappoint. It could have been much lousier. I'm happy with the quality.

The extras consist of mostly tracks not in the main feature, including the wonderful "Love, You're a Whore." There's also a fun accelerated soundcheck and a sweet dedication to Daniel Cho, her cellist who passed away.

It's a concert I'll watch several times, but I do hope her next concert Blu-ray has more put into its production, and it would be nice to see a big venue performance alongside a more intimate one. Keep it up, Regina.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wake up and smell the coffee on this talent December 28, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
OK, I just watched the entire DVD and I'm going to give it to you straight. This girl is a talent, first rate. I've read the critics that tear apart the video editing, the mixing, etc, blah, blah, blah. But listen to the music and especially listen to the lyrics that she has written. I think, and others may disagree, that the video is intended to replicate the live concert experience, which it does...quite well actually. The mix pushes her voice, what she is singing and the words that are incredible poetry set to very unique lyrics. Every one of her albums has been an exponential improvement over the previous one. (Yes, I have them all.) And the album "Far" is the best to date. For those of you too young, listen to the early Joni Mitchell works before she made "Blue" and then after that you will be awestruck. Regina Spektor is up there...yes with Joni, Ricki Lee, Alannis and Leslie Feist. Brilliantly written music and lyrics and best of all, this girl can sing....I mean she REALLY can sing.

Please snag a copy of this and give it a shot. If you like ANY of her songs, then you need to see, hear and feel this music because I'm going to warn you now, in 20 years, you'll be wishing you could say you saw the light on this woman's talent. Buy it and enjoy it. I can promise you she is only going to get better with each album that follows. Been there, seen that....

This is your warning shot across your bow. Thank you Regina and nice job.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great singing/DVD? Not so much December 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Three stars for the film/five for her performance.

I'm late to the Regina Spektor party, having become interested in her only since 2009, when "Far" was released. I'm glad to have finally made her acquaintance.

This live collection, from the tour supporting "Far," was filmed in London, and while you'll be interested to view it once or twice to at least see the way the spooky-eyed unconventional beauty interacts with her audience (they love her; she loves back), you'll probably spend more time with the audio CD. The film is not all that well done, as a previous reviewer explains way better than I possibly could. It has all the clichés--the arrival at the theatre, shots of the rehearsals, a bit about her getting someone else's bag at the airport--the usual switches from color to b&w and back (MTV--1989), and so forth.

But her voice is great, and I was glad to see she's at least as good live as she is in the studio. Regina's serious fans will want this; if you're new to her you'll be better off with "Far" or one of her earlier albums.

Parental advisory for explicit content!?
Why not simply skip that particular song? To disregard the entire album based on a few uses of "colorful language" seems pretty silly, if you ask me.

Soviet Kitsch contains a number of S-words, B-words, and God damns. Begin To Hope has a P-word. It's got some sexual content as well.... Read more
