3.0 out of 5 stars Great overview for the new listener
"Live in Texas" has the feel of a Lyle Lovett greatest hits album. That's both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. The selection of songs highlights some of the best from all his albums, as well as including one songs not on his other albums, "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues", a showcase for Francine Reed.

However, the performance of all these songs is pretty...

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovett totally impresses, December 4, 1999
I'm a parrot head...but I like nearly all forms of music. When I was in Nashville in mid-November 1999, I went to the bar of the hotel I was staying in to listen to the guitar player and to hear him sing. One of the songs he sang was "If I Had A Boat." I asked him where the song came from and he told me Lyle Lovett. When I got home, I looked up Lyle Lovett and wanted to get the CD that had this song on it. I ordered "...Live In Texas." I had alway thought of Lyle Lovett as a country music artist and wasn't sure of what he had recorded. But then I got this CD, listened to it, and was totally impressed. I can't say enough good about this CD. This is one of the best music CD's of the 90's I've heard. Lovett has a gift for balladeering. His songs are poignant, have meaning, recognizable to our own lives, and funny. Lyle takes the ordinary and makes it reflective as he does in "Closing Time." And yes, "If I Had A Boat" is among the collection and I'll always remember it for having introduced me to Lyle Lovett. This guy and his band are GREAT! Lyle has an excellent voice. It's pleasing to listen to and he has the perfect intonations, emphasis and pauses in his delivery. This CD is wonderful. I didn't think it would be this easy to make a new fan. But when an artist has talent and can touch the heart of the listener, then he'll get fans. Buy this CD. It's NOT country (I like country btw), but a blend of country, jazz and folk and it's just plain good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for the Masses, January 27, 2000
By A Customer
I have always prided myself on the broad spectrum of music which I listen to. However, I had always avoided Lyle Lovett for some unknown reason. Maybe it was the whole Julia Roberts thing. But let me tell you...this is one of the best albums I have heard in my entire life. Live In Texas captures so many elements of music on one live CD. It flows from happy-go-lucky, swinging numbers to slower, pensive peeks into the mind of Lovett. Partiicularly amazing are the songs Nobody Knows Me and If I Had A Boat. These two songs will remind you of those lonely nights where you sat alone at your computer, looking for some form of entertainment since your life at the present time has none. Lovett's voice is so passionate that it could move a grown man to tears. If you are in the least bit curious about Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, then you must check out this CD. This is the CD to startb your Lyle Lovett collection with. And trust me, like Lays potato chips, you can't stop with just one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A knock-you-dead swing through Live Lovett Land., November 7, 1999
By A Customer
Call it Bob Wills-meets-Tower of Power. Call it folk, jazz or country. Whatever you choose to call it, it is a must for any serious music collector. Having little foreknowledge of Mr. Lovett, et al, it seems divine intervention directed me to this superb live recording. The horn arrangements and dynamics of such jewels as the rollicking "I've Been To Memphis" and the funky/bluesy "Penguins" throw Lovett into the realm of bandleader extraordinaire. Lovett's sexy-smooth vocals on the moving and subtle "North Dakota" will break your heart. "If I Had A Boat" and "M-O-N-E-Y" are just pure fun. "Here I Am," a wry romp through Lovett's views on an absurd human experience will leave no doubt about his songwriting acumen. From Andrea Zonn's fiddle to Matt Rollins' piano to the perfectly blended backing vocals, the musicians are top-notch, the execution flawless. Mr. Lovett, you've won a fan for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh No, You Can't Resist It !, February 5, 2000
In my book, there is no one to top Lyle Lovett. His music is a joy to listen to although I can't begin to categorize it.(Don't believe anyone who labels him as pure country.Country can be good, but Lovett is much more.) Imagine a creative blend of blues, country, swing, gospel, western, big band, and folk with a little rock mixed in. Then add in Lovett's lyrics which range from wickedly funny to hauntingly , beautifully heart- breaking. Not to mention Lovett has one of the best voices going.Very smooth, very sexy. And if you are like me and usually don't enjoy live albums please do not be put off by Live in Texas. Not many people can live up to their studio recordings in concert, but I think Lovett may have even surpassed his on a couple of tracks."YOU CAN'T RESIST IT" is worth the price of the CD alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to being there, August 27, 1999
By A Customer
I've loved Lyle ever since my then boyfriend, now husband, introduced me to his music. Lyle is an artist for people who like to think when they listen to music. His creativity is shared by his incredible ensemble who feel free to improvise and play off one another. (Other than Lyle's performances, I've never been to a non-classical concert which featured a cello solo.)

I was surprised that "Penguins," a song I don't care for from an album I can't bring myself to buy, sounded great. Imagine then how thrilled I was with favorites like "She's No Lady," "If I Had a Boat," and "Here I Am." Listening to this album takes me back to memories of attending a live performance by Lyle and the Large Band in Nashville.

Of course, the real hidden gem of this disc is the powerful, versatile voice of Francine Reed. She gets warmed up on "What Do You Do," grinds through "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues" (not a Lyle Lovett song), and keeps the momentum going to the album's climax -- an incredibly spirited version of "Church."

The only thing that would make this disc better is if it included a live version of "Flyswatter/Icewater Blues."

5.0 out of 5 stars Is there such a thing as a perfect album?, April 12, 2000
By
Where to begin? Everything on this album is startling. I usually listen to music with an R&B/Dance sound. "Live in Texas" is a folky, rock, blues album. Nonetheless it is simply amazing.

Lyle's voice is just the right combination of twang and smooth. His lyrics are just the right combination of tongue and cheek and serious. He is right on in every way- note wise, emphasis wise, volume, etc.

And his band? Oh what a tight recording this is. Often, live recordings are muttled and the playing not as crisp as studio albums. In fact often, on a live album, the music will actually sounds less "alive" than on a studio album (ya can't go back and redo the drums or guitars on a live album). But this band is so in tune with each other its unbelieveable. In every song, the players play of each other and leave just the right amount of room for Lyle and his guests voices. The ryhthm section in Lyle's big band is the perfect combination of staying in the pocket and holding the groove but still being visible...

I could go on and on, but just go and listen for yourselves. This record is unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite live albums...., February 10, 2005
One of those rare well-recorded live albums with the best of the muscian's lineup to date. "Live in Texas" is a great CD. Wish I ahd been in Texas at the time it was recorded, would have had a blast in the audience.

"I don't like country" some folks will be saying. Give this CD a listen, there's as much blues, gospel, R&B and jazzy arrangements in these 14 tracks to defy that label.

Steller samples: "M-O-N-E-Y", "You Can't Resist it", "She Aint No Lady." Love Lovett's arrangements and his whimsical twists on lyrics. A winner all the way around.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best live album M-O-N-E-Y can buy..., July 6, 2001
Seriously, live albums are usually a waste. The sound is usually either horribly compressed, muddy or "distant". The songs are usually inferior to the studio versions, and they are usually too damn long!!! This wonderful gift from our big-haired hero is quite the exception... the sound is unbeleivable... really, it has to be heard to be understood... it doesn't just sound like you are in the auidence, its sounds like front row center! This sounds better than most studio albums-- every instrument is distinct, and even in the most complex arrangements, you can follow any instrument all the way through. Just listen to the jaw-drooping bass solo on "That's Right You're Not From Texas"--- if that doesn't grab you by the throat, there is something wrong with either your ears or your speakers! It is so present, so alive. I would say without hesitation, this is the best-engineered live album I've ever heard. We used this to test out my brother's new speakers and just about everything else we listened to was sort of a let down after this...

Musically, I mean, just look at the set list! These are great songs. The band is amazing, playing with tightness and precision rarely heard... sure, we could all gripe about the tunes that aren't here, but enjoy what we have. These are all at least as good as the studio versions... some are far better. "Church", my favorite Lovett song, is stretched out even further. the "choir" sounds great, but it's not overdone either. Excess is enemy of many live albums, but this one is tight and focused with a coherence rarely heard. It is esssential to any Lovett library, and also a great introduction to his music for newbies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost as fabulous as the concert, October 12, 1999
I saw the concert in Seattle this summer and it was one of the top 5 concerts I have ever seen. This CD is a faithful representation of the sound, and almost captures some of the live energy, although nothing quite compares with a live version of "Church!" I only wish the CD had "Pontiac" on it -- I was moved to tears in the concert, and the audience was dead silent for each and every crisp note. Otherwise, a perfect album, and one of my favorites of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyle Lovett is great, great, Great., January 31, 2005

"Catbird" "Catbird" (Canton, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
A lot of good music comes out of Texas. Diverse musicians like

Lyle Lovett are one of the reasons that is so. With him, the

story and the meaning come first. But then he adds the most

individual arrangements to his words, and he works with talented

musicians who express his meaning and his ideas. It is a great

thing that he uses parts of folk, country, blues, jazz, pop, and

any kind of music that is necessary, because what he has to say and the way he

says it needs a broader palette than a single genre could provide.

It doesn't matter what you call his music, country or jazz

or pop or whatever. It is all good, and always entertaining.

If someone expects it to be similar to something more commonly

found in the musical market, that someone would be disappointed.

And if his work WAS like everyone else's work, then his many

fans would be a whole lot more disappointed.

Lyle Lovett is great. This live recording is a good chance

to hear his interaction with his band.
