Reasonably intuitive,
This review is from: Live Interior 3D Standard Edition [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I'm remodeling a small cottage. Taking out some walls, putting in French doors, new windows, a bath, etc. I have no experience at all in interior design or with design software. I'm on a 2 yr. old MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.11). I just wanted something that would "think" logically. I wanted a variety of room types that I could alter. I was given this. So then it's: I want this wall to be longer, how do I do that? Oh, you just grab the wall and pull it out. Or if you want it smaller you push it in. I want to delete this window - okay, highlight and click delete. I want to add a window to this wall. Okay, I grabbed a sample window from the doors and windows display and dragged it on to the wall. It was oriented ACROSS the wall at first but if I dragged it around a bit it adjusted to be IN the wall. There was another software "window" that let me size the window and say how far off the floor I wanted it. For some reason the default setting was "fixed ratio" which seems sort of stupid. I didn't notice this button at first so when I made the window wider it kept getting taller. Then I deselected the "fixed ratio" button and all was fine. It seemed to be lacking a bit in objects (variety of doors, kitchen appliances - still don't have a stand-alone refrigerator) but I was offered a 200MB library of additional objects so I downloaded that and next time I checked my library of objects there were a lot more.
I could easily toggle between 2D view and 3D view. Most importantly, when I wanted to figure out how to do something I went to "Help" at the top and usually I was then able to figure out how to do it. I haven't made anything that looks "realistic" and I probably never will. But I was actually expecting this program to be a pain in the ass and it really wasn't. I seem to be doing okay with it and I wasn't expecting that I would. I got an email promoting Punch Home Design. The reviews on Amazon weren't very good. I really can't compare what I got with anything else. I don't know if it is a very sophisticated program or not. But it just didn't seem to hard to make a room and put in walls and windows, doors, kitchen, bath, etc. and then take a look at it in 3D, go "inside" and move around, and get an idea of what I want. It was reasonably intuitive and I really appreciated that.

If you want to design a salt-box house, this will work for you. However, so will a crayon. More complex projects fall apart pretty quickly. After a year trying to make this work for a remodel of our office building, I'm giving up.
Pros: Works on Macs. Cons: even a moderately complex building completely bogs down this toy (running on new MBPro with 4gb mem). Can't do wainscot. Walls snap to the strangest locations. No auto-dimension feature. Dimensions randomly attach or don't to what they are dimensioning. Automatic room area on non-rectangular rooms places area label at an apparent "average" location outside room (yes, this can be moved but make changes to walls and it's back out there). All walls same height on floor. Porches are possible, but irritating: make walls at outline, then turn them invisible and only then can you get a roof on it. No way to do stub walls or railings. The Cons list goes on and on, but I've got to go look for a program that works well.
