4.0 out of 5 stars An intimate jazz gig by the master himself., July 28, 2003
This review is from: Live in Japan (Audio CD)
This is a great live album by Mr Scott, recorded at the 'B Flat' jazz club in Tokyo, in October 2001. He is accompanied by his longtime musical director Hill Greene, Michael Kanan, Dwayne Broadnax and Justin Robinson, the excellent 'Jazz Expressions'. This album is a gift for fans who have been lucky enough to see Mr Scott live with this fine group in recent years. There are upbeat performances of Jimmy's signature song 'All of Me', and 'All or Nothing at All', as well as 'I Cried For You', where Robinson blows some fine sax solos, but it is the ballads where Mr Scott rules. Day by Day is lovely, haunting, Jimmy's voice is fragile, sounding woeful with longing, but defiantly powerful. Unchained Melody is beautiful too, and Scott can still make you smile with a surprise reshaping of a familiar melody. 'Motherless Child' is lovely as it always is in Scott's hands, and through Bye Bye Blackbird you can hear the apprecation of the crowd over the band's music where Hill Greene and Dwayne Broadnax swing hard and Michael Kanan's piano is as stylish and soulful as usual. Mr Scott's voice is not the pitch perfect tool of his youth, and his unique style simply isn't for everybody, but if you have seen him live, you are likely to have fallen under his spell, and this album reminded me of the many nights I have seen him sing, and of the magic that this jazz master creates on stage time time again.
