Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on August 13, 2013
Format: MP3 Music
I love the music on this album, but the documentation (starting with the album title) is wrong.

Before I ruin the moment by pointing out the warts give the sound samples a listen. The playing is clearly excellent and most of it reflects the classic quartet (Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto sax, Gene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums) in great form. Some of the tracks would be the only recordings of the next to last live performances they would do.

Here are the tracks that are actually from the Juan-les-Pins concert of July 22, 1967: 3, 5 6 and 7. Track 1 was never recorded in France by the Quartet in 1967, although there is a recording of them performing that song in France in 1958, but that one does not sound like the one on this album. Tracks 2 and 4 are from a November 13, 1967 performance in Paris at the Salle Pleyel. Oddly, track 8, Cassandra, is from the Concord (California) Jazz Festival recorded in August of 1979. That was eleven years after the Quartet disbanded and the members of the ensemble were Dave on piano, Jerry Bergonzi on tenor saxophone and electric bass, Chris Brubeck on electric bass and bass trombone, and Butch Miles on drums.

The bonus tracks are, as advertized, from the Rock Rimmon Jazz Festival in New Hampshire on July 12, 1963. Those tracks feature the classic Quartet with Bobby Hackett on cornet and Benny Goodman on clarinet.

Despite the errors and misleading title this is a great album with some tracks that are truly off the beaten path - especially Cassandra. If anyone knows the when and where of track 1 I would love to know. Please share it in a comment to this review.

I have been a fan of the Dave Brubeck Quartet's music for 50 years (literally). My most recent purchase is a never before released concert in Juan-Les-Pins, Antibes, France recorded in July of 1967. The 'Classic Quartet' disbanded later that year in December. There are also three bonus tracks recorded in July 1963. Two of these bonus tracks include the Quartet with Benny Goodman (clarinet) and Bobby Hackett (cornet). While the Juan-Les-Pins set is excellent in it's own right, the two tracks with Goodman are 'worth the price of admission'. It is wonderful to be able to hear the "King of Swing" Benny Goodman with the "Cool Jazz" of Brubeck and to contrast solos by Goodman and Paul Desmond. Besides, Joe Morello has always been my favorite drummer. If you like Jazz at all, you may just want to give this a listen.

We are always looking for a "Dave Brubeck" we don't own.
And, since he's been collecting Dave for over forty years, that's a push.
I found this one, and gave it to him for Christmas, and he was thrilled.
Hope you like it too.
