Bill's career has spanned over 50 years, recording seminal works with Horace Silver in the 1950's (Señor Blues), his original solo releases on the VeeJay label, a landmark album with the great Oscar Peterson Trio, and several sides as well as touring years with the one-and-only Count Basie and his orchestra. Hollywood called Bill and beginning in the 1970s, and with the help of his friend and mentor Bill Cosby began a television and film acting career including roles in The Twilight Zone, Happy Days, Sanford and Son, Harry-O, Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes, Hart to Hart, The Incredible Hulk, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, ER, Cold Case, and major films include City Slickers and Lethal Weapon 4. "Live at the Kennedy Center" was released in honor of Bill Henderson's 80th Birthday in March of 2006, and within two weeks placed on the national jazz radio charts. I love this album.
I saw this show the next year and there was no doubt in my mind that I had to buy the CD.
In some ways this is Bill's best album (of course others may disagree). He is very comfortable with the band, they are well rehearsed, and know the music well. Ed Vodicka is a terrific pianist a la Gene Harris or Junior Mance. He provides great arrangements and accompaniment that showcase Bill's voice and style, but are also interesting to listen to. There are some gems of the swingin' blues/jazz trio genre here.
It's been a while since Bill Henderson's last album, so you will hear the difference in his voice; he sounds wiser, just as playful, and a little more throaty. I like this a lot. He's such a great singer, that it's hard to imagine that he's not aware of exactly how to use his voice in this setting to make the music beautiful, sad, playful, humorous ...well, whatever he wants.
OK, I'll shut up now; just buy it.

This is a great recording by Bill Henderson. He is a master craftsman and communicator. Frank Sinatra's favorite jazz singer, and rightfully so. What taste!
