Live on Landsdowne is a must buy!!,
By A Rocker in Minnesota (St. Paul, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live On Lansdowne, Boston MA (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
For years, The Dropkick Murphys have scored highly with an ever increasing number of fans, but not so highly on the Top 40 charts. There are still many people who have never heard of this band and this is a real shame because they continue to put out some of the best music you will hear today. Still, it's the raucous, high energy concerts that keep the fans coming back again and again so a live CD truly captures The Dropkick Murphys at their best. With this release, you get a CD of their 2009 concert in Boston on St. Patrick's Day which has become a tradition in their hometown as well as a DVD which is the same concert the CD is taken from. The DVD also contains a couple bonus tracks from a separate concert in Boston as well. The Dropkick Murphys also recorded a live album in 2002 also in Boston entitled "Live on St. Patrick's Day." In this 2009 version, they play an entirely new setlist with the exception of "Forever" which also makes it here. "Caught in a Jar" from their first album also comes in midway through the show but the remaining songs are all from their last three albums. If you were to see them in concert today, almost the entire setlist would be found if you purchased both live albums. These two live albums will undoubtedly be compared to each other, but I enjoyed this one even more than the 2002 live album. The Dropkicks come in with a more polished sound and I liked Al Barr's voice more in this one. His voice has matured over the years and he has changed his singing style quite a bit. Instead of singing "Mike's songs" and having that inevitable comparison, he just has it down with how he wants to sing his songs a lot more. Ken Casey brings in his high energy and charisma and does most of the interaction with the fans as usual. I think everyone loves Ken Casey with the possible exception of the New York Yankees fans he good-naturedly pokes a little fun at before and after "Tessie." My favorite track on here was "Fields of Athenry" and I liked what they did with it. Barr comes in to harmonize at the chorus and puts a different stamp on an already outstanding concert staple. I was honestly not disappointed in any song they did here - each track was outstanding. Although Casey and Barr are the most visible members of the band, this band is getting better and better due to "the other guys." The rest of the band really rocks here and I was especially impressed by guitarist James Lynch. I think the one thing that comes out the most on both the CD and the DVD is the crowd and the band are having a blast and this is an hour and a half long party for everyone. When Ken Casey thanks everyone for making this the best job in the world the last 13 years, I honestly have to believe him! All in all an outstanding effort that captures a great band in their best venue. It is fun seeing their interaction with their fans and I would highly recommend picking up the CD/DVD combination so you can see the actual concert for yourself. In the meantime, I am sure that even though it might not chart out as the top selling album in America this summer, it will be getting a lot of airplay in my home and my car. This album is an absolute must for fans as well as anyone else interested in seeing this great band live or those who are just curious to see what they have been missing out on all these years!

Wow, ok this live DVD is amazing. If you like the Murphys don't even ask yourself if you should buy this, just do. Hell, don't even bother reading what I've written, just buy it already! The setlist is almost identical to the one they played in Montreal on their last tour and it freaking rocks. Watching this was like being back at the show. Ok, granted their could be more extras (only two bonus live songs)and that not all my favorite songs are included (it's pretty damn close though) but this goes for every live records out there. The sound quality is downright studio quality, it sounds amazing, you can hear every instruments perfectly. I could go on and on but I won't even bother because if you're still reading this then you're wasting time, BUY THIS NOW!!!!!
