GOOD LIVE MARTYN IN A LIVE SETTING,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Live at Leeds & More (Audio CD)
Two discs 72, 58 minutes each approximately. The sound is uniformly good, with the the bonus tracks having a rougher sound, which isn't really a distraction. The booklet gives a short synopsis on the late (died 2009) John Martyn's recording career through the late 90's. There are several photos of Martyn throughout the booklet.John Martyn was a free spirit and his music reflected his outlook. Born Iain David McGeachy (he adopted the J.M. name in the 60's), he was influenced by the singer/guitarist Hamish Imlach, guitarist Davy Graham, blues singer/guitarist Snooks Eaglin, as well as other folk/blues artists. When he sang he often slurred his words in order (he said) to sound like a tenor saxophone. Be advised that Martyn engages in some foul-mouthed chat with Thompson in one spot-not for the kiddies to hear-but it does give an authentic feel to Martyn's personality during a live concert. The first disc, recorded in 1975, at Leeds University, features according to the notes, Martyn-vocals and guitar with Echoplex, Danny Thomson (from PENTANGLE) -bass, John Stevens-drums, and Paul Kossoff (FREE)-guitar, who can can be heard to great effect on the bonus tracks (7-11), with his trademark vibrato (which Eric Clapton wanted Kossoff to teach him), and sustain. Sadly, a year later Kossof would be dead and Martyn would disappear from the music scene for several months. The original album was released by Martyn, from his home, on his own label. This concert recording features very atmospheric guitar and vocals, along with Thompson's genre-busting bass style, along with the subtle, thoughtful drumming of Stevens, which helps push the music along. One listen to "Outside In", just short of 19 minutes long, sets the tone for this concert. At times the band reaches into almost free-jazz territory, but pulls back the controlled chaos before going to far afield. But the sonic effect is very refreshing and exciting. Good renditions of "Solid Air" (written for Nick Drake), and "the Man In The Station", both from the album "Solid Air" are proof positive that Martyn could deliver his songs very effectively in a live setting. The song "Make No Mistake", has the earthy, rough sound he became known for, but with Thompson's bass (primarily) and Steven's drums, Martyn's sound was a cross between jazz and folk, somewhat similar to what Tim Buckley was doing in the late 60's "Goodbye and Hello", and Happy Sad" era. All in all, this concert album should be considered a classic and, hopefully, more people will listen to Martyn's wonderful songs played in this live concert. The second disc is made up of live tracks from various years/venues. The song "Big Muff" (in homage to Martyn's favorite effects unit), was recorded in Milan in 1979. "Over The Rainbow" was recorded in London in 1986, while "Looking On" and "The River" are from London on 1990. "Root Love" and "Anna" were recorded in 1983 at the Bottom Line. All the tracks have been previously released on Martyn's One World label. The Leeds concert alone makes this set worth owning. But the addition of almost an hours worth of live music from throughout Martyn's career elevates this collection to must-have. This is a chance to hear, in a live setting, Martyn's moody vocals and the exciting skillful sound of his guitar, along with a band which is the backbone for a lot of the feeling found in this music. Solo or with accompaniment, more people should hear his wonderful, sometimes esoteric music-and this live set is a good way to hear a lot of Martyn's great compositions along with his always exciting, interesting instrumental skills.

at this very moment this is the only available edition of the original LP,
This review is from: Live at Leeds & More (Audio CD)
I bought this dbl cd because I thought the Live at Leeds deluex ed. was too expensive and I am not disappointed at all. From reading the reviews in amazon the deluxe edition went into deluxion and does not include 3 of the 6 tracks original recordings included in the original LP release. I wonder if Martyn agreed to this and if this was a good decision (explanation and all) since the original Lp was released by Martyn himself and I guess those were the version he wanted to see the light of day. So, the deluxe edition is a totally different animal then LIVE AT LEEDS and maybe should have a different title, mayve live 1975 Leeds or something like that. It is confusing.I made some research and there have been many reissues of this LP: the first one seems to be the ONE WORLD label release from 1997. The first cd here has exactly the same bonus tracks.ASIN: B00000DHXE (7. My Baby Girl 8. You Can Discover 9. So Much In Love With You 10. Clutches 11. Mailman) 1998 a BMG/Sony release no extra tracks.ASIN: B0000246B0 1999 Hypertension release no extra tracks ASIN: B00002DES7 2000 reissue hypertension ASIN: B000027XTQ 2003 limited edition Live at Leeds/Kendal 1986 Label: Voiceprint ASIN: B0000DZHO2 2007 unknown release (Japan?) ASIN: B000A2PX7S well and so on and so on. Besides this edition and the deluxe one all of them are out of print. Now for the critics, this edition makes sense. First it brings the original recording and then we get live recordings spanning the 1975-1990 periods, and except the last track all of them were released and approved by Martyn himself. Not all of them are great sounding live recordings, but you get 80 minutes of live music. I think that Over the rainbow (probably this version comes from Foundations) and Anna (this version is probably only available here) are great. Then "yes we can" and "step it up" are very very good, some tracks here are better taken one at a time, either the sound gets distorted or the voice but still most of them work. here is the tracking list cd 1 1. Outside In 2. Solid Air 3. Make No Mistake 4. Bless This Weather 5. The Man In The Station 6. I'd Rather Be The Devil 7. My Baby Girl 8. You Can Discover 9. So Much In Love With You 10. Clutches 11. Mailman cd 2. 1. Big Muff 2. Over The Rainbow 3. Yes We Can 4. Step It Up 5. Dealer 6. Beverley 7. Looking On 8. The River 9. Root Love 10. Anna Much has already been said about this album, being one of the greatest live albums of all time and it holds the test of time, it reminded me of the tension in the Live Doors release, and the music flows very sweetly. You should listen to it at night with the lights shut and disconnect your phones.

Martyn in peak form,
By
This review is from: Live at Leeds & More (Audio CD)
This is the late John Martyn in peak performing form, with blistering Echoplex guitar solos that bring an 18-minute version of "Outside In" to an incandescent heat. Originally self-produced by Martyn and limited to a 10,000-copy press run, set became a runaway success. This edition includes a number of bonus tracks, all of them welcome, jazzy takes on familiar Martyn materials. Amazon is in error in saying it's a two disc set. There are 11 track, as listed here on "disc one."
