This review is from: Live Lighthouse (Audio CD)
Earland and Co. brought the Sound of Philadelphia to San Francisco's Lighthouse jazz nightclub in 1972, combining rhythm & blues horn flourishes with psychedelic soul-jazz grooves. Modern jazz compositions by Eddie Harris, "Freedom Jazz Dance", and Woody Shaw, "Moontrane", are both given intense workouts. Even the Carpenter's vocal pop hit "We've Only Just Begun" is transformed into a swinging instrumental, uplifted by a stirring solo from Charles that reveals the soul of the tune. Charles Earland - Organ Maynard Parker - Guitar Kenneth Nash - Conga Jimmy Vass - Sax (Alto), Sax (Soprano) Darryl Washington - Drums Clifford Adams - Trombone Elmer Cole - Trumpet
