Book Description

"In Live Like a Fruit Fly, Gabe Berman shares his recipe for living a more joyful, worthwhile, and abundant life in every way. A witty, entertaining, and insightful read." -- Deepak Chopra, Author, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE LIKE A FRUIT FLY? Fruit flies are born, begin attending to their fruit-fly agendas almost immediately, then succumb to old age before witnessing a single change of season. Likewise, we live and die in the virtual blink of an eye. Unfortunately, we often ignore our own mortality and simply coast through our days without ever checking out the bowl of fruit on the other side of the kitchen. The life we hoped for can wait for another day, we think. But another day often slips through our grasp, and we learn that we can't wait another day . . . that if we are to live consciously, we must learn to live like a fruit fly, not tomorrow but at this very moment, the one we are experiencing now. We are responsible for creating our own destiny. Our gut, our instincts--the GPS we're all born with--will never lead us astray if we trust it. Silver linings--more fruit to feast on--will always be within reach if only we're willing to explore.

Live Like a Fruit Fly is a call to action. Through anecdotes, insightful musings, candid stories, and hopeful messages, it emphasizes the importance of following your passions as well as being grateful through Active Appreciation (the gentle but concentrated art of meditating on 'thank you' for everything that has happened, is happening, and is about to happen) with just enough quirkiness to stand apart from the crowd.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What am I supposed to be doing with my life? That's probably the most asked question in the world of New Age. Berman claims to have the answer:  stop doubting yourself and live in the moment, like a fruit fly. His cut-to-the-chase syle and chatty tone make this an easy read. Like he says, we already know the things he's telling us, but his says them in a way that makes it seem like we are hearing them for the first time. With chapter titles like Bread Crumbs, Active Appreciation, Clown School, A Quick Lighthearted Break, Bulletproof Vest, Over the Top, Oh No, and The Dreaded Phone Call, flipping through the book will give customers a good idea of what awaits them when they read it. Whether they read the book from beginning to end, or randomly open it to read one section, what readers will find is get-off-the-couch enthusiasm and a good explanation of why that's important. This one is a good quick pick-me-up. (reviewed by Anna Jedrziewski)

5.0 out of 5 stars Responsible Hedonism? January 29, 2010
Format:Paperback
Not only are we living in age where instant gratification is paramount, but we are also bound by a self imposed expectation to have prophet like foresight into our own futures. Couple that with our natural desire to dwell in the past and the result is a generation of people that seemed to be doomed to a life of unfulfillment and problems with no solutions. Then along comes a book like Live Like A Fruit Fly. The writer makes no promises to improve your life or make you more popular with the ladies. What he does do is have that honest unbiased conversation with you that you wish your best friends and closest family members would. I am not one that enjoys reading, in fact I actually have the attention span of a Fruit fly, but this book feels less like a text that one reads, but more like a actual dialog between you and the writer. To sum it up you will not be disappointed with this work one bit. If you're at a point in life where you feel uncertain, conflicted and or lost, and answers are what you seek, you will find them, inside yourself. Live Like A Fruit just helps to show you where inside

I cannot encapsulate how inspiring this book is; the only way for you to find out is to purchase it. How precious time is, our daily thoughts consumed by the inane and banal, instead of focused on life with the imagination and wonderment we had when we were children. It is clear that our lives take on paths never contemplated, and we can either succumb or fight through the low points. As Bob Diamond said in Defending Your Life, "Fear is like a giant fog. It sits on your brain and blocks everything. Real feeling, true happiness, real joy, they can't get through that fog. But you lift it, and buddy, you're in for the ride of your life." And that's what Live Like a Fruit Fly drives home - there are those of us who have lived our lives in fear, in a chasm of the mind, and it's time to break free of those bonds. Is this difficult? Absolutely. Is it impossible? Impossible is nothing. With each day, we see new hope, new life, and maybe, just maybe, that beautiful woman sitting at that other table will finally be interested in us (better yet, me)...or maybe, if we follow the lessons of Live Like a Fruit Fly, we will have the courage to approach that beautiful woman and find out for sure. To fight the fear, fight the indecision, and LIVE. This book is a revelation. PS - if there are blank pages, maybe that means that we fill those in with our own stories, the fabric of our own lives and decisions. After all, nobody can tell you what to do to make your own dreams come true -- you have to fill the pages in yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Read January 1, 2010
By CRJ
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought and read this book (twice) last week. It's message is of course "live in the moment." As simple as that sounds, it's a key to happiness that most (especially Americans) don't even begin to grasp, and this book approaches the topic more easily than most self-help books. Dozens of rock & roll lyric quotes which will appeal to many, I enjoyed them.

It was a good read and the author has a humorous style that does not take away from the message (incl several spelling/grammar mistakes - "heard mentality" to name one). Even though it's 300+ pages, it's a 2-3 hour read as there are many blank or nearly blank pages (unfortunately many more trees gave their lives to bring you this book than were necessary - why?). If you want a simple "live in the moment" book, and that's just what some of us need, this is a worthwhile read.

Another reviewer mentioned this book in a review of A New Earth, calling Fruit Fly a better alternative. For me, that's not the case, Fruit Fly is a very small subset of A New Earth, albeit an effective easy read. Live Live a Fruit Fly is a good nudge in the right direction...

5.0 out of 5 stars He gets it! March 5, 2010
Format:Paperback
I began reading this little gem of a book with essentially no idea what to expect, which is the best way to end up very pleasantly surprised. LLAFF did not disappoint! It is relevant, smart, insightful and inspiring, while simultaneously being a quick, easy read. . .the perfect pick-me-up! A self-help style message wrapped up in a series of delicious anecdotes, observations and instructions, sprinkled with meaningful quotes, LLAFF reads more like talking with a friend than being talked to by a self-declared shrink. Too many books these days follow the latter path, making Gabe Berman's offering a refreshing alternative. He isn't reinventing the wheel by any means, rather, spreading a message that many people need to hear in a way that many people can understand: Live in the moment! Life is too short and too precious not to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Already read it twice... April 25, 2010
Format:Paperback
I read this book twice and just now read through all of the reviews on amazon. Seriously, the only way to say something negative about it is: 1. You didn't read it - or 2. You get off on being negative. Which means, you need to read the book and take it to heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a spiritual guide!!! March 5, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure what the idea behind Live like a Friut Fly was, but needed some spiritual uplifting and gave it a shot. After the dedication alone, I was hook, line, and sinker. I couldn't put it down. I can't tell you the last time I picked up a book and read it through to the end in a matter of hours. This book leaves you feeling "spiritually full" Now, having digested that, READ IT!
