5.0 out of 5 stars A required and necessary posession!, October 25, 2002

This review is from: Live From Lincoln Center - Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic accompany Isaac Stern and his friends for Isaac Stern's 60th birthday.

This presentation was taped during a "Live from Lincoln Center" telecast from Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center on September 24, 1980.

Compositions played include:
1)Bach Concerto for 2 violins BWV 1043: Perlman (1st violin), Stern
2)Mozart Sinfonia Concertante K. 364: Stern (violin), Zukerman (viola)
3)Vivaldi Concerto for 3 Violins: Stern, Perlman, Zukerman, violin
4)Brahms Violin Concerto: Stern, violin

What a stunning performance of the Bach double, such sweet tone!

I totally love the Bach double. I remember the first time I listen to my father's record when I was 13. It was the first time a piece of classical music hit me really hard and deeply. I didn't find out until later what piece it was, the melody of the first movement was so powerful that I recoginzed it 20 years later!!!

I love how all the layers of sound swirl around in the first movement, so intricate and always moving. The second movement is so delicate and beautiful. The third finishes nicely.

Now when I want to hear this concerto I just pop in the video. The two violins of Perlman and Stern are so sweet and perfectly compliment each other.

The Mozart is sublime and I love hearing Zukerman play his sweet viola.

Watching the Brahms is how I will remember Isaac Stern, this is a great chance to really experience his style and the tone of his great violin. How can you not love this man?

For me, this is an essential part of any violinist's collection, a required and necessary posession...

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class Performance, August 5, 2003

Three of the greatest violinists of our lifetime all performing together ... what more could you ask for? There is a point during the Vivaldi Concerto for Three Violins where Perlman and Zuckerman smile at each other, obviously enjoying like crazy what they're doing. Conductor Zubin Mehta senses the joy of the moment and cracks a smile himself. So did I, and I suspect you will too if you have a chance to catch this performance.
