This has a great set list and the dvd is excellent however this cd leaves something to be desired. The band is in good form, near their peak and this was an above average outing - necessary because they were on video as well. Anyway, the sound is marred - it's muddy and bassy to the point of distraction. This was recorded nearly 28 years ago (feel like a geezer); not the stone age so you'd expect better. I suspect this was transferred from vhs.
Another annoyance - they left the interview portions on this from the video in - what crap! You want a live show? Then no interviews needed in my opinion they detract from the songs and they are not separate tracks either. Several songs suddenly go from a live performance to talking (they are touring London). You like talking? Get books on tape and leave it off my cd. Fans will want this regardless; this product however, has much room for improvement.

This is a bit of a mixed feelings one for me. Its great to see this Live at the Hammersmith Odeon finally see light of day as a CD, but frustrating to see how lazy the record company was in leaving all the between song interviews in it that makes no sense as an audio experience. The original VHS is based on a live show with interview segments between songs that have various band members talking about the band as they tour London on a double decker bus. Now imagine trying to figure that out as you listen to the CD. With a decent edit this could have been a terrific release as it captures April Wine at their commercial peak with a show based on their best known international releases of First Glance, Harder Faster, Nature of the Beast.
The positive side is that it captures some of the excitement of the Nature of the Beast tour and offers up a bunch of songs the band doesn't do live very often anymore. If you've got some decent equipment at home, you can edit out the chatter and clean this thing up nicely. Highly recommended for big April Wine fans who didn't know this was available. For new or curious fans, save your money and get Live, Live Greatest Hits, or the King Biscuit Live Album as they are all simply live albums without the distractions of the interview segments. |
