Biography

Vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the ‘40s and ‘50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents’ generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and ‘60s. In a recording career that spans nearly three ... Read more in Amazon's Diane Schuur Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE FROM SCHUUR~BRAVO DIANE~WOW!!! June 6, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This "Live In London" concert recording is the blissful tour-de-force masterpiece from Diane Schuur that has been years in the making...singing just doesn't get any better than this!!! Years of numerous great albums and a few token Grammy Awards make Diane one of the most sadly overlooked great singers of her generation...hopefully this amazing collection of tremendous and fine performances will take care of this blaring oversight and thankfully KKGO in Los Angeles plays this great singer alot and it is really wonderful to hear a real voice on the radio which sadly is a hard find these musically bankrupt days. Opening with a loose jazzy version of "Deedles' Blues", it is clear that Diane is at the top of her game and in superb form...continuing with sublime 2AM romantic versions of "I'll Close My Eyes", "Close Enough For Love" and "As' that are glorious, Diane then launches into a hot and burning latin jazz "Poinciana" which is a wildly riveting experience. More definitive versions of classics continue with an achingly beautiful "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and a gorgeous and inviting "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" that rival versions of the past. "When October Goes" is a haunting stunner while "Besame Mucho" is given an exhuberant workout that is red hot and Diane's loose and great scat routines are thrilling to experience!!! A deeply soulful and beautifully sung "The Very Thought Of You" is mesmerizing but the heat is turned up again with classic and magnificent versions of "So In Love" which is wildly intoxicating, a scat rhythmic tour-de-force "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Don't Have That Swing)" and "Please Send Me Someone To Love" which becomes a passionate plea that is deeply moving and the glorious finale "Over The Rainbow" is pure vocal magic and singing at its finest!!! Anyone who loves a truly awesome voice that can do it all will find endless hours of listening pleasure here from Schuur!!! BRAVO Deedles...you really brought it ALL home this time!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid performance. June 7, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Lot of cats out there never get a chance to record so many albums after all these years, but Diane still has it. I certainly recommend it, and she sure does Stevie proud on "As".

5.0 out of 5 stars Deedles Live in London !!! February 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Diane Schuur’s jazzy, elegant style is squarely front and center on this terrific live recording! True, some may say it’s not her best performance ever but I think she gives everything her all and it shows—just one listen proves it! Diane’s sophisticated phrasing, excellent diction and keen sense of timing (not to mention her ability to scat remarkably well) all combine to enable her, along with her ensemble of musicians, to deliver a truly fine, quality set despite a few tiny flaws here and there. Her rapport with the audience is excellent and the sound on this CD is really quite good. And, as for the other musicians on this album, listen for Scott Steed on bass; Rod Fleeman on guitar and Reggie Jackson on drums.

There really aren’t any duds in the lot here—every track’s a very good number. Diane (aka “Deedles”) and the others play with the tempos and keys to these songs and ballads and allow Diane to place her stamp on them with panache; and “Deedles’ Blues” shines every bit as bright. Believe me, “Deedles' Blues” was one heck of a way to start off the performance; it had me tapping my foot to the beat very naturally without my initially even realizing it! I also particularly enjoy and appreciate just how passionately Diane and the others deliver “I’ll Close My Eyes;” “Close Enough for Love;” “As;” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight;” “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To;” “Besame Mucho;” “The Very Thought of You;” “So In Love;” “It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing;” “Send Me Someone to Love”—and Diane’s solo, a cappella rendition of “Over the Rainbow” is quite a memorable encore!

The liner notes provide the song and album credits and Diane’s website address is provided. Dianne herself contributes a few words and the photography is very nicely done.

I highly recommend this album for Diane Schuur fans as well as jazz aficionados everywhere. This is one electric recording to cherish for quite some while to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good times June 9, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I highly recommend the CD, I've been listening to Diane for quite some time and this one takes the cake. I'm really glad to hear she's still kicking since her first release in the eighties. Certainly a worthwhile purchase.
