Get down with Ruth Brown, March 1, 2000
This review is from: Live in London (Audio CD)
This is a really great CD. It was recorded live in a London club, and it has the feel of a night in a club, it's as if, you are there. Ruth introduces some of the numbers, comments on the band and the audience between some numbers, and on two tunes she does a little extended shtick that is really fun. Then, of course, there's the music. This CD has a lot going for it, Ruth Brown is known for her R&B hits of the fifties, and her voice has a blues singer's soul and immediacy. That is, it's a very musical voice but she sounds like she's speaking right to you rather than rehearsing her arpeggios. And she has a lot of personality that she uses to give unique interpretations to the tunes. The tunes on the CD are mostly standards, and more than half are slow, yet, the disc has momentum to keep you listening start to finish.
Also, the band and arrangements are great. The band is a small band, six pieces, that sounds like a large band. The band has the driving yet supple rhythm of a small band and the power of a big band, and this is a great combination.
And here's the kicker. Great singer, band, groove, arrangements, but still, when you're in the middle of a tune, the singer needs to be able to call on someone who will step up and play something that will put a hurtin' on the audience, that will take it to another level. Ray had Fathead. The Coasters, Aretha, and others, had King Curtis. Fats had Lee Allen. JB had Maceo. And, Ruth Brown has ... Robert Kenmotsu. This guy's playing is absolutely untouchable. He has the sound, the lines, the blues nuances that come from way down deep, and the originality to keep it surprising. He kicks serious booty everytime he steps up.
Often I've gone to a concert and thought, man, they really should have recorded that. This time they did.

Superb, March 2, 2001

Ruth Brown at her best. Excellent rendition of "I've Got the World on A String" with nice sax solo. Her best version of "5-10-15 Hours" that I've heard. And her vocals on "Since I Fell For You" are stunning. Some songs may take a few listens to grow on you, but it won't be long before the whole album connects beautifully. Fabulous CD for setting just the right "mood" with that special someone. I've had a lot of success with this one. :-)
