Add all the great moments in all of Youssou's CD's and still this is so much more. Great performance - Of course you'd expect top quality from Youssou and his band. What a beautiful man, with lovely backup singers, hot percussion, steady driving bass and lilting guitars...A show that is not flashy but full of sincere and joyous showmanship, and rootsy vibes. Great venue and audience - playing in London in a beautiful chapel/mosque. Accoustically fine, and spacious yet intimate, full of an appreciative crowd, many seemingly from Senegal, all of them on their feet frequently. (I love the part where Yousssou has a man from the front row come up on stage to teach the crowd a dance move). Great sound and video quality - camera men stayed unobtrusive and the angles and clarity are superb throughout. This was a wonderful night and this DVD captures it all and shows us the rare quality of Youssou and his Senegalese band. Several times it had me crying tears of joy, eventually i was up dancing around my living room along with the audience, it was almost as good as being there! Good enough until Youssou brings his show to my home town....(Mr N'Dour we have a lovely outdoor stage, just right for dancing under stars on a warm moonlit night) If you like Youssou, then don't hesitate.... If you like African music, then don't hesitate.... If you like Great music, then don't hesitate.... If you like Life and joy and dance, and light, then don't hesitate.... If You are reading this, then don't hesitate!

Live in London --Youssou N'Dour,

I honestly and truly loved this DVD. I saw Youssou in concert in Cinncinatti, Ohio this year for the first time and this DVD was better than the live concert. He has 3 costume changes and the audience participation is perfect. I wish Peter Gabriel was there for 2 of the songs but the 2 women did a decent job of singing his parts. Youssou's voice was clear and precise and his band gives a performance like no other. I am a huge fan for life and I can't wait to travel to Senegal to visit him in his club. Good luck and I'm sure you will love this DVD as much as I do.

The one I've been waiting for,

I've been waiting for something that would really show off Youssou n'Dour's soaring voice and his incredibly tight, professional Super Étoile Band. This is it. There's variety, pace, audience participation, some solos for the band, and most of all there's The Voice, like a soprano saxophone. On a couple of cuts (Liggééy, Yaakaar and Griot's Gaze), the band starts to cook and we move into the realm of "this is really special". The sound and picture quality are excellent; it's a good room and they did a good job recording it. My DVD skips and the picture breaks up occasionally on my DVD player, but doesn't do so on the computer so maybe it's my player. I have seen Youssou live, and this concert is so good that I am not sure I'd want to see him live again - it might not be as good as this performance.

Well, I see that plenty has been written already about this concert. I concur with all the favorable remarks. If you don't have this, do yourself a favor and enhance your life by getting it. Then buy Youssou in Montreux in '85 and see two children performing with the band.

Didn't want it to end. This DVD was simply enjoyable from start to finish. It is evident that it was professionally made with perfect sound quality and wonderful camera angles. The location backdrop (Islington's Union Chapel London) was perfect. The only way is could be better is to have been filmed in high-def. Cheers.

A Magical Evening......,

This concert DVD conveys very warm colours, recorded with multiple camera's in a cosy setting throbbing with energy.
Youssou N'Dour is successful because he is one of the few African artists who has, besides the obligatory sense of rhythm, a knack for strong melodies and catchy refrains. His instrumetarium stretches from the ancient traditional drums and xylophones, to cutting edge synthesizers and beat-machines. Yet he does not sacrifice the polyrhythmic complexities of West African music for that easy 4/4 pop idiom that breezes along anchored by a predictable backbeat. To top it all off, his lyrics tackle serious social and political issues without turning his tunes into sombre, whining complaints. On the contrary, the music oozes optimism, pride and hope. The DVD is a worthy addition to any collection of music that reflects the sound of urban Africa today. |
