Elvis Live On Stage In Memphis,
By Mike Kurosky (Ft. Worth, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live in Memphis (Audio CD)
Elvis is in fine shape vocally and physically. He has a lot of fun on this album probably because he is playing to his hometown fans.It is not my favorite of his live albums but it is a very good live show. I do not like it as well as the others because the orchestra only has the brass at this show. It is minus the strings and reeds and the overall effect isn't quite as good as it is on Madison Square Garden or the Aloha From Hawaii Albums. Hopefully RCA will re-remaster this album and bring out the backbone of the show (the band) a bit more like they did on the recently released 25th anniversary Aloha show. The horns are overbearing and need to be toned down. Overall its a good album and worth having in your collection.

Under-appreciated live recording.,

I have not yet purchased the CD of this set, but the vinyl serves me well: it's Elvis best live-in-concert performance since the '61 Benefit show. I think the '74 effort was dismissed because it was deemed yet another in a long series, actually starting in '68. But many factors make it a very significant event: Elvis' vocals, noticeably stronger and "brighter" than on the '73 Hawaiian show; the hometown atmosphere; the version of "Let Me Be There" which was so good that (reportedly) a test 45rpm promo was made and the cut was issued a second time on a later album; "How Great Thou Art" from the l.p. which won a Grammy! And I still think that the rock and roll Medley was good enough to release on a single A-side! Fans, go back and listen (Reconsider, baby...).

ABSOLUTELY fantastic!!! This is what I experienced when I saw him in Atlanta in 75 and 76. He's in a good mood and very engaged in the music. It doesn't get any better than this although the entire concert doesn't make the recording. lastly people get a life on the criticism of his drug abuse ( I'm sure as hell not perfect) and look at the incredible impact he had on the 20th century and the stardom that nobody will ever approach again!

Un-Drugged ELVIS!,
By Marc G (Burbank, Ca) - See all my reviews

When I bought this CD I had only minimal expectatations. By the mid 70's when this concert was recorded, Elvis was on the decline physically. His Aloha concerts were marred by the obvious use of drugs just prior to going onstage, as his vocal expression was dull, weak and without focus. THIS concert however was FANTASTIC! Not to sound too clinical, but he obviously had NOT used downers before THIS show. As was said by another reviewer, Elvis' voce was sharp, in focus and STRONG...Never missing a beat and unlike the Aloha concert, he sounds like he was THOUROUGHLY enjoying every moment onstage...Just LISTEN to his rendition of, "Trying to Get to You"...it's sad that the quality of this concert wasn't as common as it should've been during the mid 70's, and that Aloha was captured for posterity on video tape instead of THIS show...a shame...We can only wonder how much more animated he was here...but at least we'll always have the voice.

This concert was recorded live, right here in the Mid-South Coliseum, in Elvis' hometown, Memphis, Tennessee.,

This concert album was recorded live March 20, 1974 in Memphis. It was Elvis' fifth live album, not counting albums that were partially live. The entire concert is not on this CD, but the whole concert has recently been released on a different CD. I would call this an average Elvis concert. There are several songs that have been on too many concert albums; like "See See Rider", "I Got a Woman", "Love Me", "An American Trilogy" and of course "Can't Help Falling in Love". The highlights of this CD are the gospel songs, which always brought out the best in Elvis. He performed three of them this time around; "How Great Thou Art" (always a powerful performance), "Help Me" (he had recently recorded this song, this is the first live recording) and "Why Me Lord" (first recording of this song, J.D. Sumner sings the verses and Elvis sings the chorus). This album also includes Elvis' first recording of "Let Me Be There", which was Olivia Newton-John's first big hit. I might mention that the Loggins & Messina hit "Your Mama Don't Dance" is part of the "Rock and Roll Medley", but the King only sings a tiny portion of that song. One final thing worth mentioning; the piano player plays the intro to "I Can't Stop Loving You" and Elvis sings "Blueberry Hill" instead, just to be funny (he does soon switch over to "I Can't Stop Loving You"). If you really want this concert on CD, you'll probably want the complete show instead of this one, but that is an expensive import.

3 1/2 Stars: His Best 70's Live Recording,

This oft-ignored album, recorded in March 1974 at Memphis's Midsouth Coliseum (formerly the center of controversy when the proposed title, the Elvis Presley Coliseum, was poo-pooed), is easily his strongest live package of the '70s, the one worth having. Elvis is in exceptional vocal form and, between all the stuff that showed up on every other live album of the period, there is a great "Trying To Get To You" and strong versions of "My Baby Left Me" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy," material he otherwise left unnoticed. - by Neal Umphred, AMG

One of my all-time favorite Elvis records,
This review is from: Live in Memphis (Audio CD)
This 1974 concert is one of my favorite Elvis recordings. "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and the magnificent "Why Me Lord" are worth the price of the album alone. Never have I heard Elvis' voice in such fine form. A staple in any Elvis fans' collection.

This is one of Elvis' best concerts, IMO. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the sound quality of the CD. While it certainly isn't bad, it's not the highest quality I've heard.
Elvis is in great form for this concert. His voice is strong and clear and he puts a lot of energy into his singing. A great concert from the King.
