A Fabulous Compliment To the 1973 WB Live Reunion Album,
By Barry45RPM "Barry" (Farmingdale, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live in New York City [Collectables] (Audio CD)
This was recorded at Radio City Music Hall in Midtown NYC. The Concert was put on in celebration of New York's (and America's) Greatest Oldies Station ever, WCBS-FM 101.1 . It was to mark their 15th anniversary playing Oldies in the Summer of 1987. It was MC'd by CBS FM's "Cousin Brucie" Morrow. The concert was brodcast live over the air on CBS-FM, and was rebroadcast one more time on tape 1 year later. After that the tapes were put away.
This CD was released by Dion in response to a bootleg Disc of this concert being sold illegally. It was of poor audio quality, and Dion didn't want anything that bad circulating with his name on it when he had the Master Tape in his posession... so out it came, in almost perfect shape. (there is one bad splice in "Brooklyn Dodger"). This version of "Brooklyn Dodger" is far better than the 45RPM version that had been released originally... almost haunting, honest, and heartfelt, and beautifully arranged, and performed. This CD is a magnificent tribute to Dion, his music, and his fans. Those who were glued to their radios listening to this concert that Summer so long ago will melt into the past... Especially since we no longer have "The Golden 101.1" in New York anymore.

Dion's rockin' return to rock & roll,
By KJS "pentman" (Rochester, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live in New York City [Collectables] (Audio CD)
This concert was recorded just as Dion was returning to the rock & roll stage after several years of recording gospel music. He appears to have missed performing his old classics because you can almost hear the joy as he effortlessly makes his way through not only the hits, but some of his lesser known material as well. The between song banter and stories are priceless, and the three minute introduction to "(I Used to be a) Brooklyn Dodger" is a tale unto itself. Even the two gospel songs flow seamlessly and are received well by the audience. His old bandmate from the Belmonts, Carlo, is in fine voice as well, and takes lead vocal on the post-Dion hit, "Tell Me Why". True Dion fans might be able to pick out the few instances where a beat was missed or a line partially flubbed, but all in all, the band was on, and everyone was in fine voice. I would actually rate this a 4.5 out of 5. My only complaint is that you can hear audience members calling out to him between songs. I just wish these could have been edited out or muted somehow. Overall, however, you won't be disappointed!!

Great Music; Great Sound/Stereo--they did it right,
By
This review is from: Live in New York City [Collectables] (Audio CD)
Love Dion DiMucci music. This live CD is different because it's him
singing without the help of a musical adjustment equipment or mixers. His voice is great--very bluesy and only Dion can place emphasis on music like the way he does: he's expert. What I love about this live CD is that the stereo setup and sound quality is done right. I went to a concert in the 90s and the sound system was not set up right. The musical instruments had their volume set so loud you can't hear the musician--no matter how experienced the singer. The only good song in that concert was the one where the performer played piano to their own sound system--that was the ONLY set where I could here the performers voice. With Dions NY Live CD the people who did this set knew exactly how to do it and the sound quality is exceptional and appropriate for such a talented set of performers: Dion and Company. What's more he was soo funny during this concert too.
