Editorial Reviews

Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bartschs band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Bjorn Meyer s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bartsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on Modul 55, but it s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener s attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Masterless Masters of Situational Improvisation October 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The title of this latest album of Bärtsch's Ronin suggests that their previous albums were all studio productions, but this is not the case. The distinction is that the group has moved out of small clubs to large concert venues in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, and Japan. The five-person group of piano and Fender Rhodes guitar, bass clarinets and alto saxophone, bass, drums, and percussion play improvisational staccato "Moduls". The 2-disk album reprises three Moduls from Holon and one from Llyria. These works are bright, rhythmically propulsive, exciting, and unique in overlays and textures. Sonorous bass notes and explosive reeds bounce off upper register piano keys. The piano may at times present melodic phrases but its true nature as a percussive instrument is more often evident. The seemingly repetitious tones and colors on closer inspection are all very different and together the pieces soon become meditative, as the slight variation in reciting mantra. Indeed, this particular album is even more varied than earlier ones, Module 35 [from Leipzig] being an example with its gong and bell-like percussion. The group is free-form jazz, championed by ECM Records. The sound engineering is first rate and stunning. Though no liner notes discussed the choice of Ronin as a name (referring to masterless samurai, later an animie series), the Ronin musical sound is itself a collaboration, one, the group avers, extends to the audience and environment. These two disks present the group at their best. I should add that the second disk is quieter, slower, and less extroverted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! October 19, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
This music is wonderful and complex. It takes its time to develop, layering pattern upon opposing pattern to create something uniquely satisfying, like a warm blanket of sound that gives you new things to find on each listening. This is a Live CD and is a testament to Nik Bärtch and all the amazing members of this group having the ability to create these sounds organically. To me, this never gets old. Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best! April 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is absolutely their best album so far.
All the other ones are really good too,of course.
But this is incredibly fresh and melodious and grooving,,,a bit minimal, very organic....
Amongst all the jazz stuff that comes out these days this here really is a very welcome and outstanding music.
There is a lot of good stuff coming from ECM lately.
Check out for instance the new MANU KATCHE album, bit similar and also really good.
