Beth Carvalho live on a magical night,
By Michael Gordon Weaver (Menlo Park, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live No Olimpia (Audio CD)
Beth Carvalho is a great singer, and a loving interpreter of the Samba tradition of Brazil. This is a live recording from 1991 (Beth Carvalho Live at the Olympia). The recording has no obvious flaws, and the mood is exceptional. I really like this album, it is one of her best. The only drawback from my point of view is the backing instruments include synthesizer, while most of her albums I have heard are done with traditional acoustic samba instruments. Beth sings many of her hits. The first eight tracks are soft, slow and sentimental. The rest of the album is a bit more upbeat.Liner notes are in Portuguese, and do not include lyrics. Note that this album is also available as 'Beth Carvalho' on Epm/Rym. Except for a few pictures from the concert that are on this album and not on the Epm/Rym edition, the two are the same.

A truly sublime voice,
By George W. Polley (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live No Olimpia (Audio CD)
I first encountered Beth Carvalho on a track on a disc of Afro-Brazilian music, then went hunting for more of her music. What a sublime voice and what a wonderful stylist. She sings with authority and grace. I am delighted to find so many of her CDs showing up in the North American market.
