5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, a must have for the library.
This is one of those books that just has too much practical information to pass by. The author has placed a great deal of information at the readers feet, just reach down and pick it up. Most of the information in this book is old hat to old timers but how many of those are out there. For the rest of us this is a source of information that cannot be ignored. A personal...

Interesting but really just the same old stuff. What to do when America inevitably goes to hell or when you have to hide out somewhere because the evil government is bullying you. You will survive if you read this book because no one else is going to figure out how to cook a dog?? Give me a break. I love reading the frightened pre-Y2K reviews. Hopefully these people...

This is one of those books that just has too much practical information to pass by. The author has placed a great deal of information at the readers feet, just reach down and pick it up. Most of the information in this book is old hat to old timers but how many of those are out there. For the rest of us this is a source of information that cannot be ignored. A personal opinion is that this book is one of the ten best for rural or back to basics/survivalist type living. A must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great starter book for learning basic survival, March 2, 1999

This review is from: Live Off The Land In The City And Country (Paperback)
The author gave great sugestions on basic survival skills. In the area of food storage he could have gave some more information on extending the life of everyday products and maybe a how to find experation codes. I would have given the book a 5 star but it was missing a few items....for the money, well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic before the new wave of survivalism, January 25, 2009

I've had my copy since the late 1980s and I recently re-read its yellowed pages again. I really enjoy the early story of Bill Moreland of why backpack survivalism isn't the answer. I also like the fact that his discussion of city survival isn't fatalistic, but realistic on the unique set of challenges posed by urban and rural survival.

This book should not be your only book on the subject, but I do think it's worth having in your collection for a number of reasons. First, Benson looks at food security from a variety of sources that many authors who focus on a survival retreat ignore. Second, he has a realistic discussion on caching supplies that doesn't glamourize subsistence living, but prevents the "all your eggs in one basket" mentality that I despise in many books. While I question why he hasn't seen the light in solar, wind and hydro technologies, every author has their blindspots and if you want a single source on the subject, good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Plan On Survival Thats Easy To Put Into Action, October 4, 2011
First off, buy this book from Paladin Press since Amazon doesnt carry it. It will cost you about $30. Thats where i bought mine!

Im a huge fan of Ragnar Benson, i own almost all of his books. Check out my reviews to see what i said about them. This is one of his better books, it easy to see why Survival Poaching followed after this book.

Everything you need to know to get by when the country falls apart is talked about in this book. He covers all the bases. What i will say, you need to get that book Survival Poaching after getting this one. How to go about getting animals to eat is covered in greater detail in that book.

This book is worth its weight in gold and i will be reading it many times over and it will always be close by me as all Ragnars books will be when things go to hell in our country. His thoughts on survival need to become your thoughts, his plan is well thought out and easy to put in action.

Who knows how much time we have left to get ready, take my advice and get started!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must have" for the survival library!, July 3, 1999

As a former US Army Infantry captain...having taught survival techniques, I can tell you that I wouldn't venture into any long term survival situation without completely knowing the details of this book. This should be the Y2K BIBLE. Invaluable info for people who may very well be trapped inside a large urban area. The section on "Roast leg of dog" is not, however, for the faint hearted! Most importantly, this book teaches you that true survival is NOT hunkered down in the woods, chewing on hides and eating raw snake. It shows that true survival must maintain a decent quality of life or life isn't worth it. ALL OF THIS REQUIRES FORESIGHT AND PREPARATION!!! If nothing else...this book shows you how to get ready. As of this writing...the world has: 181 days, 1 hr, 16 min and 33 sec. to GET READY! The best first step is to buy this book!

Hopefully these people are still living in a cave somewhere. This country has seen harder times than these. Ragnar (people refer to him by his first name?) should write a book about making a career and good money out of exploiting naive people's fears about their governments. I'd like to get in on that industry.
