Biography

Townes Van Zandt lived the songs he sang. Sadly, that meant he couldn't live long. The hard-living Texas songsmith was 52 when he died on New Year's Day, 1997. Though he failed to make an impact on the charts during his lifetime, he was greatly respected among the country and folk singers around him and his works have been re-recorded by many notable artists including Nanci Griffith and Lyle… Read more in Amazon's Townes Van Zandt Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Great (maybe THE greatest) live recording, January 13, 2000
This review is from: Live at the Old Quarter (Audio CD)
Well, the customer reviews of this cd that preceded mine are all correct. This is a great live record. I already had a few live TVZ recordings, but this one far exceeds them. The quality of this recording is incredibly high and the mood is intimate throughout (hear Townes tell corny jokes while he tunes his guitar between songs). Along with the quality of this recording, I'd also like to point out its quantity. All 26 songs from the original album are included on the Charly reissue - unlike the original cd release, which dropped 6 songs. Anyone who is a fan of TVZ, or thinks they might be, MUST have this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good, no, GREAT as it gets, December 1, 1999
This review is from: Live at the Old Quarter (Audio CD)
I've been a big TVZ fan now for a few years, stumbling on him thanks to Steve Earle and Son Volt. Luckily, I've been able to get copies of most of his albums since they've recently come back in print. "Live at the Old Quarter" was the last one I needed to complete my library, and the best truly was saved for last. This set captures Townes at his pinnacle. Unlike other available live offerings, this is all Townes and Townes as he was best...alone. One gets a better impression of TVZ the guitarist as well as the singer. The only downfall of this set is that he didn't play every one of his songs. Notably absent is "I'll Be Here in the Morning" and "Our Mother the Mountain". If you are a TVZ fan, you need this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Being There, November 24, 1999
By
This review is from: Live at the Old Quarter (Audio CD)
It's probably pointless telling anyone who doesn't already know it that Townes Van Zandt was the best song writer of his generation. His songs are proof of that. But he was also a gifted and magical performer. If you never had the chance to see and hear him live, then buy this set and get some faint idea of the humor and pathos he brought to a performance. The man lived his music, and you can hear just a little of what it was like listening to him play and sing in some crowded overheated bar in Texas. Alas, this is as close as you can get to the real thing now that he's gone.
