Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Live performances recorded on a tour of the British Isles in 1976 and at McCabe's in Los Angeles in 1978. Wainwright is folk ìmusic's foremost black humorist, blacker at his bleakest and funnier at his funniest than anyone else writing today. ìDefinitive solo performances of "Motel Blues," "Lullaby," "Kings and Queens," "Hollywood Hopeful" and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars sad songs about romance and funny songs about..., May 14, 1998
By A Customer
...random things (like suicide, drinking, etc). Some of the sad songs are a little humorous and others are serious and moving. All are entertaining. I find this to be one of the LWIII albums I can listen to the most (I'm the sort of person who listends to a lot of music but has trouble listening to an album more than twice a week even if it's great and I just got it).

Go on, give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy to find it on CD, March 15, 2004
By Randy Mcnutt (Madera, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I didn't realize this was available on CD. I've had it on vinyl for about 20 years, (since before I got my first CD player.) I absolutely love this album! It's probably not for everyone, but what real art is? If you're already familiar with Loudon, but haven't heard this, you really have to get it. If you're not familiar with him, I recommend this one to anyone who appreciates funny, very personal, and extremely well-performed folk music. This is a real gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Angry not-so-young man, July 4, 2001
Loudon's career was at a nadir at this point, and his anger about that definitely shows on this CD. He had gone from being a critic's darling, an SNL-worthy celeb, a "product" people were willing to throw money at to find the right packaging to wind up a guy who had (and still has, amazingly) trouble holding on to a label.

I was no LW3 novice when I first heard this album and still, I found it rather shocking in places. There's a little too much "feeling" in songs like "A Clockwork Chartreuse" and "The Suicide Song"--not to mention an awful lot of weariness in "Lullaby" and "Red Guitar" for a guy in his mid-thirties.

But persistence and professionalism pay off: LW3's pop-chart success may have been as random as any one-hit-wonder, but his skill as a performer was forged through hundreds of live performances, and it shows here at what might be considered a relatively "early" time in his career.
