It is on the second disc that Oaky is at his classic best - weaving his trancy web to lift you out of this mortal existence. No denying that he has never been able to reach the same heights as his `Tranceport' set, but then has MJ ever delivered another `Thriller' or Pink Floyd another `Dark Side' ? I'm tired of people comparing all his work to Tranceport. `Live in Oslo' lives and shines in its own rightful domain. Buy it. Or miss a taste of eternity. A must for trance worshippers. Oaky rules. Is God listening ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great older CD, September 2, 1999
By A Customer
CD 1 is basically Drum & Bass but it definetly rocks. CD 2 has the picks up on some older trance but it will definetly get you moving. If you want to complete your Oaky this is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oaky's great, but this one is showing age, August 25, 2000
I walked into a record store the other day and they were playing "live in oslo" disk 1, I know because I have listened to it so many times. I didn't have a good reaction to it though. It just sounds dated. The drum&bass is good and cool... but still sounds like D&B from a few years ago and the same goes for the trance on the other CD. I have the utmost respect for Oaky, especially with his Tranceport and Resident releases... but this one just hasn't held the test of time well. For people who haven't heard much trance, this is a good CD, and they will enjoy it. Those people will be even happier once the listen to someone like sasha or Oakies newer stuff... For people who are tired of the usual trance anthem, this is a good break. But for people who have been listening to trance for several years, they will recognize exactly how dated this really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD2 is great, May 30, 2000

Cd1 isnt that good, pretty slow - a lot of drum and beat. CD2 is the typical oakenfold style (which most of us love) and is essential for all oakenfold fans. I give the set 5 stars just for CD2.

If you dont already have them, you should buy tranceport and global underground-NY before you buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb., November 13, 2001
This review is from: Live in Oslo (Audio CD)
Ignore the review below by Christopher Culver, he obviously hasn't got a clue what he's talking about, I agree that Sasha and Digweed are superior mixers as far as technical skill is concerned but what he doesn't understand is that Oakenfold has never been a mixer, what has made him one of the all time greats DJs has been his taste, resulting in superb track selection.
Also Culver's arguement is crippled because this Oakenfold mix was mixed 'live' whereas the Digweed and Sasha sets he refers to were done on a computer using pro-tools, most of Sasha's and Digweed's sets are done this way.

Paul okenfold's live in Oslo is a great but for any global underground fan or like great trance with killer beats. It is highly recommended. But dont expect two great CD's number two rocks. CD 1 lacks something but no CD ever has two good CD's besides his first and best when he did GU in New York. Look it up its the best he has ever done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Innovative, December 28, 2000
Oakenfold's Oslo mixCD is by far one of the most intriguing CDs in my collection. While the mixing style is often rather minimal (with tracks coming together only a few bars at a time for most of the CD), it is still a standout mix. Why? Well, for one MAIN reason: disc one.

Disc one is almost two mixes in one. The first half of the CD (tracks 1-7) are basically chilled out, atmospheric jungle. Omni Trio, Olive, LTJ Bukem... The usuals in this department. Oh, but it is such an emotional first half. This atmospheric set works its way up into the second half though, kicking off with a classic Bedrock Tune ("Set In Stone") and grooving through 4 more trance numbers that really show Oakenfold's goa roots. This sets us up for the second disc.

Disc two is all pretty much like the second half of the first disc. More psychedelic-styled trance -- *not* goa, but again Oakenfold's goa roots are showing here. This disc opens up with another (now) classic Bedrock tune ("Forbidden Zone") and just works that energy for another 70 minutes. This disc is well populated with excellent tracks from the time (1997) though; there's some Taucher, Eve, Astral Projection, and Shades of Blue's "So Much" (which I feel is perhaps the disc's highlight track).

But, while innovative and a joy to listen to, this CD does show its age now, 3 years after its release. Do I still recommend it? Well, if you're looking for good quality mixes: yes. If you're just looking for what's hot at the moment: no. Or maybe I'd tell you "yes" anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, August 28, 2000
I love Paul Oakenfold. This may lead me to write a somewhat biased review. Here goes :) Live in Oslo is not Oakie's best CD out (Cream is better and so is New York) but it is certainly better than most DJ compilations on the market. I like CD1 and CD2 equally. CD1s got some great songs (8, perfecto mix of youre not alone, 11) and some goa light stuff at the beginning. CD2 from song 4 on is off the hook! So Much is like the funniest song: youll love it! Its the kinda song thatll make you just wanna dance and laugh (know what iM talking about people). The album gets kinda frantic at the end with Rhapsody in Venice a great great song and trance in saigon. sO GET the CD if youre really into Oakenfold. If not try New York as a starter or even Tranceport.

4.0 out of 5 stars You'd think it's dated, but..., July 6, 2000
The sign of a true visionary DJ, such as 'Oakey' or other premier-league DJ's, is when they can craft mixes that sound so fresh even years later. Play these CD's and you'd be forgiven for thinking that these are the tunes of the moment, the selection is of such quality.

Oakenfold's magician's touch though is sometimes let down by a few suprisingly sloppy track mixes, something which doesn't show on his later (and superior) work such as the tour-de-force that is GU007: New York. But don't let this put you off, though this may have been crafted 'way back' in 1997, CD1's Drum & Bass & CD2's trance mixes make this a welcome addition to any dance fan's collection.

If you've already got alot of the Global Underground CD's this is really worth getting, especially if you liked Oakey's GU007. If you're new to the GU series however, this might be a good starting point to give you the general flavour of the series...
