Differently Perfect for Oakie,
By
This review is from: Live in Oslo (Reis) (Audio CD)
i love this album, because it's so much different than all his other albums. The drum and bass in the begginning of disc 1 is incredible, then it proggesses slowly but surely into incredible prog trance. Oakie may get more credit than he deserves most of the time, but i feel like this album is pure. You don't feel any commercialism coming out of this album. Simply brilliant. If you've been listening to trance non stop and get sick of how its all the same than this cd will give you a great change. You wouldn't here many of these tracks on any of his other cd's which Oakenfold has a terrible habit of doing( putting songs on the same cd). If you don't have this album, i highly suggest you get it, for well if your a big oakie fan, than this cd will just let you know that he can do different types of mixing( and not in a commercial bunnka or swordfish kinda way) CHEERS

One of the gems in Oakie's resume...,

It's a shame Oakenfold has abandoned his acid and goa trance roots for commercialized house, pop, and generic trance. His recent slew of albums (Bunkka, Swordfish, etc.), particularly under the Perfecto label, seem to be a shameless sell-out to the American market which seems to favor overplayed anthems rather than the innovative acid beats that Oakenfold is known for in his earlier albums (Tranceport, GU 4 & 7, Fluoro, etc.).This album is a very good testament to Oakenfold's prowess in his early years, before and during his residency at Cream. The first cd starts with tantalizing drum-n-bass that lasts well into the 2nd half of the cd. The listener is treated to soothing melodies that drift along with smooth transitions. The tracks by Omni Trio, LTJ Bukem, and LML & Richie had me hooked the first time through. The mood immediately changes with John Digweed and Nick Muir's "Forbidden Zone", kicking off the trance remainder of the set. The remaining four tracks consist of some very unique but catchy tunes that cruise along to the end of the cd... The second cd consists of mainly acid, goa, and plain hard trance. With tunes from the likes of Taucher, Bedrock, and Astral Projection, you can't go wrong in listening to this cd time and time again. It was very difficult for me to acquire this album as there doesn't seem to be very many in circulation (the same goes for GU 7, Fluoro, and Cream Resident). However, it is definitely worth the effort to find as it captures Oakenfold skills as a pioneering dj at its peak.

Oakenfold Sucks, This cd is great,

Oakenfold does a great job with this one. The selection is excellent, combining dnb and trance on the first cd, and ambient trance on the second. This cd compares with the skill used in Tranceport and Swordfish, and the Bedrock tracks are sick. Although i dont reccommend supporting Oakenfolds scene-destroying regime, this cd is worth owning.

One of Oakeys greatest mixes.,

Ok, if you not into the whole drum n' bass thing on the first cd thats ok, I personal love. But it you don't, put in the second cd. This is quite possibly the best mix I've ever heard. The second is a pefect mix of GOA. It has a nice dark feel to it and it's very addictive. I guarntee you'll love this album, especialy cd 2.

I own about seven Oakenfold albums and have been following his career for some time now. Disc One of the Oslo set is beautiful with a worldly feel featuring dark, moody textures. Elysian Fields is a spooky opener that sets the drum & bass tone tone of the set on disc one. Trippin' on Broken Beats adds a jazz element to the beats, then on to the moody Beyond Therapy and Alaska with drum & bass beats persisting, with a psychedelic, India vibe... then a beautiful piano solo bridging into Music for the Lonely by Jamie Myerson puts you on some sort of twisted production line. Olive's You are Not Alone continues with the industrial drum & bass vibe. After some progressive trance from Bedrock comes the track "Reach" by Lil Mo Ying Yang (Basement Jaxx Firecracker Remix), which is an amazing, chaotic track with primal screams, firecrackers and sirens going off. The remainder of the set is brisk trance.
This album will probably disappoint those fans who are fond of Oakenfold's driving Tranceport style. It will appeal to those looking for a moody global journey from the mind of Paul Oakenfold.

Some of the best Oaky,
This review is from: Live in Oslo (Reis) (Audio CD)
How can you describe Oakenfold?? A legend to trance music... I'll admit all of his stuff isn't that great (especially his newer stuff including Creamfields) but none-the-less Oakenfold brings a unique trance style that is unmatched by other mainstream DJ's. Global Underground OSLO is one of the best DJ mixes I have ever heard. If you want to have an intense night of dancing to some intense house-ish trance this CD is definitely worth it. From start to finish it keeps you engaged in the music - never a boring moment. The vocal trance that is also mixed in is the cherry on top (may be bias! - i am huge vocal trance fan).
If you are an Oakenfold fan and want something better than Creamfields or Bunkka -- THIS IS A MUST BUY.

I liked this CD a lot. I liked the Drum-n-Bass tracks on the first CD, mixed with the world-flavor and ambient-type acoustics. The transition into that Olive track is amazing. I skipped back to that several times. As good as this CD is, I don't think it compares to other Oakenfold albums, like Tranceport, or Perfecto Presents Another World. If you don't already have those, I would recommend getting those, prior to this album.

i must say i do like this cd. im into all sorts of music like anything from bob marley to six feet under so you could say my opinion of this is unbiased by my liking of any genre of music. it is very well crafted and i absolutely love how he goes from one song to another by changing the tempo to where you dont even notice the change and its freaky!but all in all its some of the best trance ive heard in a long time so if youre into that sort of thing go out and get this cd.

This is one of my favorites. It takes you on a journey to a different place...I like that it mixes some genres successfully. The first CD has some great DnB, even though I'm not such a huge fan of it. An incredible track is Reach--the firecracker mix. Far out! The second CD is not as strong as the first but still good: it is more trance oriented. One track that annoys the heck out of me is the first one by Bedrock--it has an arpeggiation that just doesn't fit--sounds like a Reason Matrix preset. Could we be any more original? Buy this, you'll like it.

I wish new Oakie stuff was like this. This album is simply amazing, a wild trip. It's like being in a club without even going. Except for the first track, (too long) and one other track (too long with just drum n bass), the first cd is perfect. Even though I'm not crazy about the first song, the riff comes back in the last song on the first cd, just once, like a little joke, or deja vu. The second cd is a killer slower cd, better for a cooldown. I mostly listen to the first cd; it's my all time favorite in this genre.Lastly, there's a version of "Interspace" by Discodroids on this cd that is ONE OF THE BEST YOU'LL EVER HEAR! It's just amazing- I've looped this track and listened to it for about 50 minutes- it's that good. Trust me. |
