5.0 out of 5 stars The best italian performer to date, at her best!
If you have heard Laura Pausini's work before you know what kind of music this is: romantic ballads, upbeat pop, extraordinary lyrics and an outstanding voice from one of the most talented artists out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great music, lousy video production
Her voice is glorious, and her musicians are top-notch, but she should fire the video production team. The camera angle changes so quickly I felt I was going to have a seizure! They insist on showing lots of sweeping audience shots instead of showing more Laura. And one thing that drove me crazy: they kept showing the stage from a camera at the very back of the...

If you have heard Laura Pausini's work before you know what kind of music this is: romantic ballads, upbeat pop, extraordinary lyrics and an outstanding voice from one of the most talented artists out there.

Live in Paris 05, as its name states, holds the recording from Paris of Laura's latest world tour. The bundle includes a very well recorded CD and the video in a DVD. It is very well balanced in contents between her latest album ("Resta in Ascolto" in italian, and "Escucha" in spanish) and her classics, such as Strani Amori, Tra te e il Mare, Le Cose Che Vivi, etc. Resta in Ascolto as well as Non C'è are presented in spanish for the benefit of her hispanic fans. The only song in english is from "From the inside" her only english album, and obviously the interpretation is from her hit "Surrender".

All versions, as any live concert, vary a bit from the album versions but they hold true to their essence. Personally, I find them even more amazing because you get to hear nuances in the interpretation that are only in Laura's hands, so this is as close a performance to the singer as you will find.

Her melodic voice is powerful as ever, and instruments play along to create an atmosphere that is meant to stay in the heart. Laura has sung in italian, spanish, english, portuguese as well as french (only in "On n'oublie jamais rien on vit avec" - with Helen Segara-, though) but the fact that this dvd bears the presentation from the french capital, leads us to believe that her next move may be a bigger leap into Baudelaire's language. Just a thought.

If this is your first contact with Laura Pausini, Live in Paris 05 is probably not your best option. Obviously this is an excellent album you would enjoy, but you would be missing the whole experience if you don't know her past albums. If you are just getting to know her, you are better off buying "The Best of Laura Pausini: E Ritorno da Te", where you will find all of her hits from the first years of her career. This one is a must have. If you hear that one and like it, then you're on the right track, cause her latest albums just keep getting better. "From the Inside" is all in english, so if you're an english speaker you'll appreciate this one. To me, however, her best album yet is "Resta in Ascolto". It is by far the best album ever. Every song in there is pure gold, all are single material. They talk about independence, love and personal growth. There is even a very touching piece referring to Irak's invasion (Dove l'aria è polvere) that really stands for the deepness of this material.

This is what you will find in Live in Paris 05, a memento from the magical tour of a performer that has grown and gone great distances since she won San Remo's contest at age 18. Today, a bit more than 10 years later, Laura Pausini proves once again the quality of her work. This is just a sample of what truly is the soundtrack of a lifetime. These are songs that truly go with "the things you live" (Le cose che vivi). 5 stars stand for "excellent" but I still feel I'm missing stars.

And one thing that drove me crazy: they kept showing the stage from a camera at the very back of the auditorium - the cheap seats! Come on! Settle the camera a little on beautiful Laura!

Her World Tour DVD is much better. What a disappointment this concert DVD concert is.

5.0 out of 5 stars not quite as good, February 12, 2006
While I find hard to disagree with anything written in the above positive review, I must note two things: first, Laura is stiff and uncomfortable but one will not appreciate this unless one compares this performance to her earlier DVD. Second, this disc skimps technically with 2 channel (not 5 channel) extras, and the lack of a DTS track, which at least in the previous DVD, really made a difference. Of course, since I received the Paris CD after it was released it has not left my car CD , so that tells you how much these problems have kept me from enjoying the disc. Call me bitter. Laura blows us off here in the US just like we blew her off when she came here several years ago.
