5.0 out of 5 stars Vol 12 is awesome, December 20, 2002
This review is from: Live Phish Vol. 12: 8/13/96, Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana (Audio CD)
When they open with a Divided Sky like this one, you know you're in for a great night. This is my favorite Sky in the series. Tube is next - tight and awesome - my favorite Tube. Tela - beautiful. Maze - trey takes you up and down and up and down. Totally Rocks. Things calm down with very nice Fast Enough. Old Home Place is fun, PYITE is cool, Llama is shredding, Trey's voice is on. A glide - Nice! A Slave to close the set?? AWESOME Disc.

Second set. AC/DC Bag builds and builds and flys out of the park and flows right into Lizards. Terrific. Mike's Song. Here's where things get nuts. This Mike's Song is intense and relentless. Trey's soloing is unreal and this song takes you down deep. The Page solo and Fishman jungle-groove towards the end heads into Lifeboy. This is a super-happy Weekapaug, and then Page gets his Theramin going for a wacky Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I'd buy this volume just for Disc 2 - Mike's Song = WOW.

Nothing really Mindblowing on Disc 3, but the Bowie and the Ya Mar > SOAM is very very cool, but look to Volume 7 for an awesome SOAM.

All my favorites are here, played flawlessly: Divided Sky, Tela!!! Glide, AC/DC BAG, Maze, Slave, Mike's, Weeks, And and a stupifyingly raging Bowie. Fast becoming my favorite of the series. A must have for the serious phan and a great introduction for the poor curious soul who is just now stumbling across the greatest band that jams in the land.

4.0 out of 5 stars Live Phish Vol. 12: 8/13/96, July 25, 2002
This review is from: Live Phish Vol. 12: 8/13/96, Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana (Audio CD)
Really a great recording of a great show. Divided sky is fantastic, and I haven't heard a better version of Tube, and any show that includes Rocky Top, Old Home Place, and Strange Design is something worth giving a listen to. So far, this is my second favorite of the Live Phish releases, surpassed only by the Fukuoka show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Show, June 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Live Phish Vol. 12: 8/13/96, Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana (Audio CD)
This CD has everything.
If you want to hear paige at his best, buy this CD. The piano and keyboards make this CD phenominal. I've listened to it almost everyday since my purchase. It has all the best elements of Phish on it from the tremendous jam song "Divided Sky," to the funky "Tube" to the ballad written after the mysterious but ill-fated "Tela." That is just the first three songs. It has some 'grass on it in the form of "Old Home Place" and the crazy "Rocky Top." It also contains an initial performance of "Train Song" where the band seems a bit shaky but it adds to the quality and origionality of the disc. Phish knows just when to rock and calm it down during this show. Anyone at this show was lucky to see such an amazing setlist and performance. Unfortunatley it has one of the worst versions of "Punch You In the Eye" I have heard. Very loose and unorganized, but I guess that tends to happen when a band just lets things happen on stage the way Phish does. Buy this disc whether you're a new or old fan. No dissapointments here.

5.0 out of 5 stars the ol' 96er, May 31, 2003

Trey starts the show by saying, "i've said it before and i'll say it again," and from there Divided Sky takes flight. The boys had to know that this was going to be one of those nights. Trey plays the first few seconds, then page joins in, and you can just feel it. This is the perfect Sky, alone it is worth the price. It bends and curves with every lick of Trey's guitar, every strum of Mike's bass, all the beats of Fish's drum, and of course Page's fingers dancing on the ivory. The Tube that follows is amazing and Page plays the monkey out of those keys. The PYITE gets you groovin after the old place, and the Llama is ferocius.

The second disc picks up exactly where they left off. AC/DC is super tight, and the lizards that follows is full of fun and performed perfectly. Mikes>Lifeboy>Groove is just another reason why this band is followed by so many year after year.

The third disc is also great. It seems not many reviewers perferred it, and i can understand why not, but who can turn their backs on strange design (what up doobs). There's also a sweet adeline that your grandmothr would love! The filler of Ya mar is funky and the Slave closes it out nicely.

But again, the Sky is phenomenal. Get the CD, crank it up and closes your eyes and boogie on.

5.0 out of 5 stars blown away, October 7, 2003

I have 10 of the 20 live phish concerts out now.. and this has got to be one of my favorites. The opening divided sky is amazing.. the band was perfect on this one, all 17 minutes of it. Tube was sounding good and the maze was a fast paced one that i enjoyed. PYITE was excellent as usual and llama was really rockin'. Slave was, in my mind, one of the high point of this show, the jam at the end is genius and it sounds perfect.
ACDC is a great opener to the second set and the always climatic ending to lizards was awesome. The ultimate best point of this show is the Mike's into Lifeboy into Weekapaug. Mikes song has an awesome jam and is over 20 minutes, then lifeboy is beautiful, how i imagined it live. and weekapaug lives up to its typical greatness.
The 3rd cd lives up to the rest of the concert with the David Bowie, Ya Mar and SOAM. The three acoustic songs to start the cd were sounding good as well. Strange Design was real good, one that i havent heard much. sweet adeline is a good acapella one. the encore of sleeping monkey and rocky top was great fun as well.

I encourage anyone to buy this cd, maybe a little knowledge of phish, but anyone could find something they enjoy in this show. its worth every penny.

This show was recording using a DAT recorder by the same man who made their guitars. The setlist is amazing...a healthy dose of Rift and Junta tunes. Fast Enough For You is my personal favorite. This CD is special to me because the venue previous to this show was Alpine Valley and also my first show. The energy at that show blew my mind and this recording captures that pretty well. '96 was a special time on Phish tour with the Grateful Dead breaking up the year before and the seasoned Deadheads seamlessly transitioning to Phish tour. What a great energy. This was the year Phish exploded musically like an A-bomb, rising to the occasion.

This was my first purchase in the live phish series, I must say I was pleased. I have heard alot of talk of the divided sky from this show.. Its really just an average live version nothing earth shattering in the jam section. This show has a nice set list, it is well played throughout.. but not really any major jams that stand out. I really like the tube and the llama rocks really hard. The ACDC bag gets out of hand at the very end.. the jam starts a bit unfocused, but if you can stick it out, the payoff is about as high energy as you will ever hear phish get! The Mikes Groove is interesting, it goes into a kind of tribal jungle beat through the Mikes song, which goes into lifeboy and an average weekapaug groove. Disc 3 has a rare accoustic set which is nice and everything else is played well but doesnt really standout. A nice setlist is always great, but the best jams are the ones you never see coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Phish, August 1, 2007

I had only heard two studio Phish hits, Sample in a Jar, and Heavy Things, before I was given this for Christmas a in 2001. I will keep this short, but this cd changed my life. It is delicious. Weed helped in the transitional phase of listening to a cd & liking it. But now, it is just one of the best pieces of music Phish has ever dropped, and if you enjoy Phish, you will love this. If you don't, I understand, I know the hippies annoy you. But honestly, I listen to jam, rap, rock, and jazz, and this album is tops.
