4.0 out of 5 stars Should of just called it Live
This is a pretty good collection of live korn songs. But there isn't really any rare tracks. Proud is probably the only one on here that is rare. Earache My Eye isn't really a rare track to me. If it's a bonus song on Follow The Leader than you can't really call it rare. I do wish the had Camel Song. It comes on the End Of days soundtrack. Should of been more rare tracks...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good music, TERRIBLE compilation, May 11, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
In 2003, Korn sixth studio album, "Take A Look In The Mirror," accumulated low record sales. Then Korn ditched Epic Records the following year, and their next album "See You On The Other Side" (which was released in 2005 on a different record label), had improved sales. So is it a coincidence that Epic released this "Live & Rare" compilation this year (after Korn started to get popular again)? No. If there ever was a C.D. released as a cash-in, this is it.

Just by looking at the track listing, one can't help but doubt that these songs are the best that Epic had. This is Korn's first live/rare album, and it already appears that the bottom of the barrel is being scraped. This disc offers absolutely nothing that the hardcore Korn fan hasn't already heard.

Out of the thirteen tracks on here, only two are rare studio songs. Korn have many other rarities which are inexplicably absent here (i.e. "Camel Song," "Xmas Song," "Jesus Was A Mexican," "Jingle Balls," "Kick The PA," and "Sean Olson"). Plus, the two rare songs aren't even all that rare. "Proud" (a stellar and very emotional "Life Is Peachy" b-side) already appeared on the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" soundtrack; and "Earache My Eye" is a Cheech and Chong cover which was the hidden track at the end of Korn's junior album, 1998's "Follow The Leader."

The selection of live songs isn't much better. The first seven songs (which were recorded at Korn's famous concert at CBGB club in New York) are perfectly executed, and are at times even louder (with more audible bass notes) than the original songs. But, we've already heard all of these songs, because this concert was recorded and released as a bonus DVD in Korn's "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" package. It's also curious that "Right Now" is represented in its edited form. (That's not necessarily a bad thing, just kind of odd.)

Next, the cover of "Another Brick In The Wall (Parts 1, 2, & 3)" is a great live performance (recorded on 2004's Projekt Revolution tour), but you already own this song if you own the "Word Up" C.D. single. Likewise, "One" (a Metallica cover) is lifted wholesale from the "Did My Time" single, and it is also the very last song on "Take A Look In The Mirror."

The last two live songs are from Woodstock `99. These two songs, "My Gift To You " and "A.D.I.D.A.S.," are probably the only two songs on here which you haven't heard (unless you've downloaded them). These songs also sound raw, loud, full of aggression, and all around very cool. But it's curious why more songs from this concert aren't included here.

All in all, this is an OK C.D., but it could have been A LOT better. You'd probably be better off making your own live and rare collection, but if you're a Korn fan who doesn't want to spend hours in front of the computer or spend money buying C.D. singles, this is a good, convenient grab. Otherwise, please don't reward Epic for this blatant cash-in. So, in short, if you're a diehard Korn fan, you've already heard all of these songs, so stay away from this disc. Far away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Live And Not Really Rare, May 16, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
You knew it was coming, sooner or later. With Korn's recent success with the "See You On The Other Side" album, it was pretty obvious that Korn's previous label, Immortal/Epic, was going to find a way to cash-in somehow. Enter "Live And Rare." A pretty pathetic "collection" of live cuts and rare tracks that spans Korn's pre-"Other Side" career. Maybe the novelty of having another CD where Brian "Head" Welch is still a member of the band will be enough for you. Maybe if you are really out of touch when it comes to Korn, you will be pleased with the tracklisting. However, if you are simply a loyal Korn fan, you'll feel ripped off from the get-go.

First off, we have seven songs from Korn's 2003 performance at the now defunct CBGB's in New York, to promote "Take A Look In The Mirror." If you bought the "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" 2-disc set, than you will notice this is just the audio from the DVD. Big whoop.

Next up, we have a couple of covers. First, a live performance of Pink Floyd's classic anthem "Another Brick In The Wall," as recorded on the Projekt Revolution Tour '04. A great live performance of course, but if you have the "Word Up" single, you already have it. However, if you can't be bothered with imports, than this is a good entry to this collection. I find this performance to be much better than the album version. Coming up next, we have the cover of Metallica's "One," as performed on MTV. We've heard this song before. In fact, it's been beaten into the ground. Not only was it a secret track on "Take A Look In The Mirror," but it also appeared on the single for "Did My Time." I really don't need to hear it again. A studio version would have been nice, but no such luck.

And to round out the live section, we have two songs from the infamous Woodstock 1999, "My Gift To You" and "A.D.I.D.A.S." Now, these are absolute killer performances. Why they didn't include more from this show (or just release the whole show instead of this collection) is beyond me. I have the whole show bootlegged, and it is stunning. "My Gift To You" is enough to send shivers up your spine. Top notch performance.

Finally, the rare tracks. All two of 'em. First, there is "Earache My Eye." Rare? I think not. Just fast-forward at the end of "Follow The Leader," and just like "One," there it is. The inclusion of this song was just a bonehead move. It's a fun cover, with the bandmembers switching instruments (Fieldy on vocals) but it's been done. "Proud," which is my personal favorite b-side of Korn's, however, is a nice inclusion. Although it already popped up on the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" soundtrack, it's still great to hear (especially with the extra little intro). I love this song, and why it didn't make it's way onto "Life Is Peachy" (the album it was recorded for) is beyond me.

So, really, most of this collection is kinda useless. It's so cheap and uninspired, with it's weak tracklisting and lamest of lame artwork (or lack thereof). It's pretty obvious that Korn had nothing to do with this (although they get their own "thank you" section in the liner notes). This collection is merely for those who want a complete Korn collection. If you don't have money to burn, I suggest avoiding it. You can get all these songs on just about any Korn fansite, and surely, there are tons of excellent live bootlegs to grab out there as well. Personally, I feel like my intelligence is being insulted with this collection. Immortal/Epic are simply taking advantage of Korn's fanbase, and not even trying to disguise it. When record labels moan and complain about slumping sales and illegal downloading, I hope they look at releases like this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sony's first posthumous KoRn "Cash-In", May 13, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
First off, you have to understand that KoRn does not, as a group, endorse this release... nor did they choose what material would be on this "Live and Rare" album. You see, upon leaving Epic/Immortal for the Virgin label, KoRn lost all rights to EVERYTHING they recorded/produced under Sony's label. Therefore, Sony now has all control and can release JUNKY COMPILATIONS like this whenever/however they want now. The songs are excellent, DO NOT take this review as me bashing KoRn... I am criticizing Sony for releasing these readily available tunes for a quick buck. Nothing is "Rare" about this album. I cannot wait for the day Sony has to sell off the KoRn catalouge... Hopefully, KoRn and Virgin will be ready to deal the highest bid!

So this is what happens when your former record label wants to cash in on your popularity, even after you've left ...

Have to say that this disc, while not bad, still leaves a lot to be desired. It's a very underwhelming first listening and while it does grow on you, it's not a disc that you're dying to listen to again.

For me, the three-part "Another Brick in the Wall" is great, but doesn't hold up to repeated plays.

That being said, the band's performance of "One" is a nice addition ... just wish they did a more complete version of the song.

My biggest complaint about the disc is the mix overall. The performance at CBGBs in NYC is a poor live recording, folks. The vocals are way down in the mix and the bass is all over the place, virtually on top of everything else. No excuse with the recording technology available these days.

Nice try Epic, but this one just ultimately falls flat.

1.0 out of 5 stars They dont know what else to do......, May 10, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
This has to be another effort to be alive on the music industry. The live performance is the same one that come with the DVD from Greatest Hits Part 1. They add "new tracks" as Proud which is on the soundtrack of the movie I know what you did last summer. Earache my eye its the last song from Follow the leader but live. One is from the tribute to Metallica. If all that is "rare" they are really desperate for money.
Dont buy this CD buy the new tool Cd which is way better.

It's not really for everyone. And if yoy really want to save some money most of the songs on here you can find to download. It seems Epic just tried to make some money off Korn.

3.0 out of 5 stars fairly good live album but not too many rare songs on it, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
This is a good live album but its not too great. It only has 13 tracks which i think is a bit short for a live album, as for the rare songs the only ones that aren't on other korn albums are the covers of metallica and pink floyd songs(which are great and made the album for me). The recording of the tracks is fantastic and you can hear everything as if your there at a korn show. its a good album but could have been so much better

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, yet troubling..., May 10, 2006
By
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
I'll start with a cliche: I'm a huge Korn fan. I'm definitely not the biggest and am a more recent convert, having finally fell into their music trap with 'Did My Time' and then going back to learn all of their music. Korn is great live, of that there is no disagreements.

For those who haven't heard them live yet, this is a terrific cd to get a good taste. With the exception of the first song, 'Did My Time' which felt rushed, each song is terrifically performed at the various venues (New York, Maryland, Universal Studios, Woodstock 99, etc). However, the whole cd feels like a marketing ploy. Titled "Live and Rare," it definitely lives up to the first moniker. But rare? Well, 'Earache My Eye' is a hidden track as is their cover of 'One.' 'Proud' is from the soundtrack of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which I guess qualifies this as rare. But for some reason I know this song (and I don't have nor have I listened to the I Know... soundtrack)...I *think* it was also a hidden track, but I can't be certain.

Troubling also in that there is at least one song that has been edited. 'Right Now' is the more radio friendly version that includes "Shut up or I'll bust you up" as opposed to its original version. On a Parental Advisory album, its a bit confusing.

Its a good album to think about purchasing if you're a fan of Korn. None of the songs are what I would consider rare, exactly. When I think of rare I think of songs that might not have made it on an album but are performed live possibly so not everyone has had a chance to hear them. I also prefer live albums that are from one venue as opposed to multiple so that you get that full experience as opposed to a slapshot of not only multiple venues but also of times. Obviously a cash-in from Epic, Korn's last production company (which also makes sense that this wasn't a lauded release from their website), it's above average but I expected more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, Terrible Tracklist, May 9, 2006
This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
As a huge fan and collector of Korn, I bought this CD right on it's release day, but I knew not to expect much. First, it's important to know that this CD has been released by Korn's FORMER record label, which means the members of the band had no part in putting this collection together. The label is obviosly just trying to make more money off of their former act, and they have no idea how to assemble a proper collection of music. Second, this CD isn't really live and rare...it's live with 1 rare song.
The first several tracks were recorded at the famous New York club CBGB's in 2004..."Blind," "Got The Life," "Freak On A Leash," "Falling Away From Me," "Here To Stay," "Right Now" and "Did My Time." These live tracks all sound excellent, in fact better than I expected. Then there are live versions of "My Gift To You" and "ADIDAS" which were recorded at Woodstock '99...all in all, good performances. Then there's the famous performance of "One" that the band covered at the MTV Icon tribute to Metallica. This is a great cover (despite it's shortened length) but most of you may know it as the hidden track on the "Take A Look In The Mirror" album. That's the LIVE part of the album. For the RARE, there are 2 studio tracks, but only one of them is really rare. First there is "Earache My Eye"...this song is really just a big joke song that features Cheech Marin on vocals. They probably wrote/recorded it while they were high. This would still be a valid rare song to include, if it wasn't already on "Follow The Leader" as a hidden track...does the label think fans are stupid and just wouldn't notice? The second and final studio rarity on here is "Proud" (the main reason I bought the CD). This track was recorded sometime between Korn's first 2 albums, and it's a pretty decent track. It was previously released on the soundtrack to "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
I don't have any real complaints about the music that's on here...you get some cool live tracks and 1 (maybe 2) rare tracks. However, this list of songs just seems thrown together and kinda pointless. If the label was smart, they would release a complete live album from beginning to end, and then they would release a complete album or rare tracks from beginning to end. Along with "Proud," there's plenty of stuff they could have included like "Sean Olson," "Kick The P.A.," "Jingle Balls," "I Can Remember," "Camel Song," and tons of remixes that are out there. I know if Korn themselves had a part in this kind of collection, the tracklist would make a lot more sense.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rare? Huh?, May 9, 2006

Ben Sumner (Beltsville, Md. United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Live & Rare (Audio CD)
This album shouldn't have been made. Not because of the music, but because it was put out by Korn's former label, Epic, obviously trying to get paid as Korn promotes 'See You on the Other Side.' This is a suit's album, plain and simple. As of the release date (May 9, 2006), Korn hasn't even mentioned it on their website!
On to the album itself... there is nothing rare here. It's basically their greatest hits - live. Many Korn fans might even have tracks that are on this album. The live version of Metallica's 'One' is here - the same 'hidden' track on 'Take a Look in the Mirror.'
However, that doesn't make it bad... It's fun to listen to, and it's always a bonus when you can hear the crowd singing along, especially the chorus. But still, this shouldn't have been made at all. Had Jonathan Davis been involved, I'm sure it would've been better.
